Biography

Short Description

The 522 Spanish Martyrs are a large group of Catholics killed in Spain during the anti-clerical persecution that accompanied the Spanish Civil War. They were beatified together by authority of Pope Francis on 13 October 2013, at a ceremony in Tarragona. The group is not one family, parish, or religious order, but a collection of bishops, diocesan priests, members of many congregations of men and women, seminarians, and lay faithful, drawn from numerous dioceses across Spain. They died at different times and places, chiefly in 1936 and in the following war years, in territory held by the Second Spanish Republic, where revolutionary militias and local committees targeted clergy, religious, and known Catholics. The Holy See judged that they were put to death in hatred of the faith.

The historical setting was the collapse of public order and the outbreak of revolutionary violence after the military rising of July 1936. In much of Republican Spain, churches were burned or closed, public worship was forbidden, and thousands of priests, nuns, brothers, and lay Catholics were imprisoned or executed without regular trial. Modern historical estimates commonly place the number of murdered clergy and religious in the vicinity of six to seven thousand, besides many lay victims. The 522 recognized in 2013 form only one of several cohorts whose causes were examined in Rome; earlier large groups of Spanish Civil War martyrs had already been beatified under Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. The Tarragona group was assembled from causes that had reached maturity by that date, which explains why the blesseds come from many institutes and regions rather than from a single massacre.

Tarragona was chosen for the rite because of its rank as an ancient metropolitan see, its early Christian past, and the number of martyrs associated with Catalonia and neighbouring territories. Cardinal Angelo Amato, then Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided in the Pope’s name. Pope Francis, elected only months before, did not travel to Spain for the event but approved the beatifications according to the Church’s ordinary process for martyrs, which does not require a miracle at the beatification stage. Relatives, religious, and pilgrims filled the city. The newly declared blesseds may be venerated in the dioceses and communities connected with them; they have not been canonized as a body, and they do not occupy a single date in the General Roman Calendar. Local calendars typically keep the memory of individual blesseds on the anniversary of each one’s death.

Because the 522 were many persons and not one, they have no common year of birth, no single birthplace, and no shared religious order or family life. Some of the lay members of the group may have been married; the clergy and religious among them lived under celibacy. Their remains rest in various churches, convents, and cemeteries throughout Spain. The Church presents their deaths as a testimony of fidelity rather than as a political statement about the Civil War. Later beatifications have continued to add names to the long roll of twentieth-century Spanish martyrs, of which this group remains one of the largest recognized in a single ceremony.
