Biography

Short Description

Aaron of Auxerre was a bishop of the ancient Gallic see of Auxerre, in Burgundy, during the later years of Charlemagne and the opening of the reign of Louis the Pious. Almost nothing can be established about his family, place of birth, or career before he occupied the episcopal throne. Like many Carolingian diocesan prelates, he is known chiefly from local episcopal catalogues and from the Gesta pontificum Autissiodorensium, the serial history of the bishops of Auxerre begun in the ninth century. In that tradition he succeeded Bishop Maurinus and is assigned an episcopate of about thirteen years, conventionally dated from around 800 until his death in 813. No contemporary vita, collection of letters, or substantial charter dossier survives in his name, so any reconstruction of his life must remain modest and closely tied to the institutional history of the see.

Auxerre was already a church of considerable prestige by Aaron’s day. It belonged to the ecclesiastical province of Sens and looked back to early bishops such as Peregrinus, Amator, and, above all, Germanus of Auxerre, whose cult and monastery shaped the religious landscape of the city. A ninth-century bishop there was expected to administer cathedral and parish clergy, safeguard church property, maintain liturgical order, and cooperate with royal missi in the wider programme of Carolingian reform. Whether Aaron attended particular synods, issued notable privileges, or undertook building work is not securely documented in the sources that remain. The silence is typical rather than suspicious: many provincial bishops of the early ninth century survive only as names in succession lists, obits, and later liturgical calendars.

He died in 813, according to the received chronology of the Auxerre bishops, and was succeeded by Angelelmus (Angelelme). Later local usage numbered Aaron among the sainted occupants of the see. His cult was essentially diocesan and never generated a widely copied legend or a network of extra-regional dedications. Martyrological and hagiographical compilations most often assign him a feast on 28 September; some calendars give 27 September, which corresponds to a reported obit on the fifth day before the kalends of October, and a minority mention 9 October. He was not the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type. Veneration arose, as it did for many early medieval bishops of good repute, from local liturgical custom and episcopal memory rather than from a process at Rome.

Because the name Aaron is shared with the Old Testament high priest and with other Christian figures, including the British martyr Aaron of Caerleon, later compilers have occasionally conflated distinct persons. The bishop of Auxerre is a separate, historically modest figure of the Carolingian church. No reliable contemporary account of miracles, writings, a detailed deathbed, or a precise burial site has been transmitted. What can be said with confidence is limited: he was a ninth-century bishop of Auxerre, he died in 813, and his own church remembered him as a saint. Beyond that, the record is too thin to support further biographical detail without speculation.
