Biography

Short Description

Abbo of Fleury (Abbo Floriacensis) was a Benedictine monk, abbot, and scholar of West Francia, counted among the principal learned men of the late tenth century. He was born near Orléans in the middle of that century and was formed from youth at the monastery of Fleury on the Loire, a house that had become a major center of Benedictine life and study after receiving the relics of Saint Benedict. He studied the liberal arts there and at other Frankish schools, including Paris and Reims, and acquired a reputation in grammar, arithmetic, astronomy, and theology. He made his profession as a monk of Fleury and taught in its school before his later travels.

In the 980s he accepted an invitation from Oswald of Worcester, a leading figure in the English Benedictine reform, to teach at the newly founded abbey of Ramsey in Huntingdonshire. He remained in England for about two years. There he wrote Quaestiones grammaticales for his students and, at the request of the Ramsey community and on the basis of information associated with Archbishop Dunstan of Canterbury, composed the Passio Sancti Eadmundi, an account of the martyrdom of King Edmund of East Anglia. This English sojourn linked Fleury’s learning with the monastic revival under Dunstan, Oswald, and Æthelwold. Abbo returned to Fleury about 987.

He was elected abbot of Fleury in 988 after a contested succession. As abbot he worked to secure the house’s papal privileges and exemption from local episcopal control, obtaining confirmation in Rome from Pope Gregory V. He clashed with Arnulf, bishop of Orléans, over monastic rights, and he took a notable part in the wider dispute surrounding the deposition of Archbishop Arnulf of Reims, arguing that such a case belonged to papal judgment. He addressed an Apologeticus to Kings Hugh Capet and Robert the Pious on royal and ecclesiastical authority and on the orders of Christian society. His other writings include treatises and tables on computus and the calendar, work connected with the Calculus of Victorius of Aquitaine, a Collectio canonum, an epitome of papal biographies drawn from the Liber Pontificalis, letters, and verse. He corresponded with Gerbert of Aurillac, later Pope Sylvester II.

In 1004 Abbo traveled to the priory of La Réole in Gascony, a dependent house of Fleury, to restore discipline among monks who resisted reform. A violent affray broke out between the local community and the abbot’s companions; Abbo was struck by a lance and died on 13 November 1004. His monks regarded him as a martyr. His body was carried back to Fleury and buried at the abbey. He has been venerated as a saint, with liturgical commemoration on 13 November, and is remembered as a teacher, computist, canonist, and defender of monastic liberty at the turn of the first millennium.
