Biography

Short Description

Saint Anthony, known in the East as Anthony the Great and in the medieval West as Saint Anthony Abbot, was born in the mid-third century, traditionally in the year 251, in the village of Coma near Heracleopolis Magna in Middle Egypt, then part of the Roman Empire. His parents were prosperous Christians who raised him in the faith. When they died he was about eighteen to twenty years of age. Hearing in church the Gospel counsel to the rich young man, he sold his inherited estates, distributed the proceeds to the poor, placed his younger sister with a community of consecrated virgins, and took up an ascetic life near his village, attaching himself to local hermits to learn prayer, fasting, and manual labor.

Seeking greater solitude, Anthony withdrew into the desert. Athanasius of Alexandria, in the Life of Anthony written shortly after the saint's death, describes prolonged spiritual warfare in which demons appeared as wild beasts, soldiers, and seductive figures. Anthony resisted through prayer, the sign of the cross, and extreme fasting. He dwelt for a time among tombs and later enclosed himself for some two decades in an abandoned fort across the Nile. Disciples gathered around the enclosure, and around 305 he emerged to instruct them, giving a rudimentary organization to a community of monks, though he himself remained drawn to solitude.

Anthony later retired to the Inner Mountain, identified as Mount Colzim in the Eastern Desert near the Red Sea, where a monastery grew around his hermitage. He left this retreat on notable occasions: during the persecution under Maximinus Daia he went to Alexandria to encourage imprisoned Christians, and later he again entered the city to support Bishop Athanasius against Arianism, publicly condemning that teaching. Though described as unlettered, he was sought out by pilgrims, officials, and emperors for counsel. Athanasius presents him as a healer, wonder-worker, and father of monks whose reputation spread across the Roman world.

Anthony died in 356 at a great age, traditionally one hundred and five years, at his hermitage on the Inner Mountain. He instructed two remaining disciples to bury him in an unmarked grave so that his body would not be divided or displayed. The Life by Athanasius, soon translated into Latin by Evagrius of Antioch, became a foundational text of Christian monasticism in East and West. In later centuries the Western Church venerated him as Saint Anthony Abbot, depicting him with a tau-shaped crutch, a bell, and a pig. He was invoked especially against skin diseases and ergotism, popularly called Saint Anthony's fire, and as patron of animals, farmers, hermits, and monks. The medieval Hospital Brothers of Saint Anthony, founded in the Dauphiné in the late eleventh century, further spread his cult and organized care for the sick.
