Biography

Short Description

Anthony, known in the West as Anthony the Abbot or Abbot Antony and in the East as Anthony the Great, was born in the mid-third century, traditionally in 251, in the village of Coma near Heracleopolis in Middle Egypt. His parents were prosperous Christians of local standing. After their death, when he was about eighteen or twenty, he inherited land and household property. The principal narrative of his life, the Life of Antony composed by Athanasius of Alexandria not long after Anthony’s death, states that he was moved by the Gospel passage in which Jesus tells a rich young man to sell what he has, give to the poor, and follow him. Anthony disposed of his estate for the benefit of the poor, entrusted his sister to a household of virgins, and took up ascetic discipline near his village, then among the tombs outside it.

Seeking stricter solitude, he withdrew into the desert. He occupied for some two decades an abandoned fort or enclosure at Pispir, the so-called Outer Mountain on the east bank of the Nile, living in seclusion while disciples gathered at the gate. When he emerged, he gave them a rule of life centered on fasting, unceasing prayer, manual work, and resistance to demonic suggestion. The Life describes prolonged spiritual combats, later a major theme of Christian art. In the early fourth century he moved farther east to the Inner Mountain (Mount Colzim, near the Red Sea), where a spring and date palms supported him and a few companions. That site became the Monastery of Saint Anthony, among the oldest continuously inhabited Christian monasteries. He was not ordained and founded no centralized order in the later medieval sense; his importance was as exemplar and organizer of the eremitic life that defined Egyptian monasticism.

Though he preferred withdrawal, Anthony twice went to Alexandria: once during the persecution under Maximinus Daia to encourage imprisoned Christians, and again in old age, at Athanasius’s urging, to support Nicene teaching against Arianism. Bishops and officials sought his counsel. Athanasius presents him as a living argument that desert asceticism confirmed apostolic faith against both pagan philosophy and heresy. Traditions of letters to emperors belong to this same portrait of a monk whose authority was moral rather than hierarchical.

He died in 356, at the traditional age of one hundred and five, at his inner-mountain cell. He ordered two disciples, named in the Life as Macarius and Amatas, to bury him secretly so that his body would not be displayed after the manner of Egyptian funerary custom. A cult nonetheless arose at once. Athanasius’s biography became a foundational work of Christian hagiography and was soon translated into Latin, shaping monastic ideals from Egypt through Palestine and Asia Minor into the Latin West via writers such as Jerome and John Cassian. Later centuries reported translations of relics to Alexandria, Constantinople, and, from about the eleventh century, Saint-Antoine-l'Abbaye in the Dauphiné, where the Hospital Brothers of Saint Anthony treated victims of ergotism, popularly called Saint Anthony’s fire.

He is kept on 17 January in the Roman Martyrology and in many Eastern calendars (with corresponding Julian and Coptic dates). Western images often give him a tau staff, a bell, and a pig, the last linked both to the Antonine brothers’ foraging privileges and to his patronage of animals. He is invoked against skin disease, ergotism, epilepsy, and pestilence, and as patron of monks, hermits, farmers, butchers, gravediggers, and basket makers. His historical weight lies in the pattern of radical withdrawal and spiritual combat that he embodied, which became a template for Christian monasticism rather than in any later named religious order.
