Biography

Short Description

Saint Bertin, also known as Bertin of Sithiu, was a seventh-century Frankish monk and abbot who became one of the principal monastic founders and missionaries in the coastal lowlands of northern Gaul, in the country of the Morini. He was born in the early seventh century in the Constantinois, the district around Coutances in Neustria. As a young man he entered the monastery of Luxeuil, then among the most influential houses of the Columbanian tradition, and received his monastic formation there under Abbot Waldebert. The sources for his early life are late and conventional, and no contemporary record of his birth survives; later tradition placed it near Coutances and assigned him a very long life, but the precise year is not independently verified.

Together with two fellow monks of Luxeuil, Mommolin and Ebertram, Bertin left that house to assist Saint Audomar (Omer), who had been made bishop of Thérouanne and was charged with converting a population that remained in large part pagan. The missionaries settled in the marshy country of the river Aa. On an island called Sithiu they established a church and a monastic community dedicated to Saint Peter. Mommolin was the first abbot of this foundation; Bertin later succeeded him and governed Sithiu for many decades. Under his long abbacy the community grew in numbers and resources, land was reclaimed from the wetlands, and the monastery became a centre of regular observance, pastoral work, and regional influence. A larger church was built, and the settlement that developed beside the abbey grew into the town later known as Saint-Omer.

Hagiographical tradition presents Bertin as an austere and energetic superior who combined the conversion of the countryside with the organization of monastic life. He is associated with the spread of the mixed Columbanian-Benedictine observance that Luxeuil had transmitted, and the house of Sithiu is counted among the important northern offshoots of that tradition. Many anecdotal details in the later lives cannot be controlled by earlier evidence and should be treated with caution; what can be affirmed is his place among the Luxeuil-trained missionaries who shaped the church of seventh-century northern Gaul and the lasting importance of the monastery he ruled.

Bertin died at Sithiu at an advanced age, according to the received chronology in or about 709, and was buried in his monastery. His tomb became a focus of local veneration, and the abbey itself came to bear his name. His feast is kept on 5 September. In the Middle Ages the Abbey of Saint-Bertin was a prominent Benedictine house of Flanders, noted for its scriptorium and its role in regional history, until it was suppressed and largely destroyed during the French Revolution. Bertin was venerated as a saint by popular cult rather than by a recorded papal canonization of the later formal type.
