Biography

Short Description

Bononius, also known as Bononio or Bonone, was a Benedictine monk and abbot of the tenth and early eleventh centuries, traditionally held to have been a native of Bologna in northern Italy. Reliable contemporary documentation of his early life is scarce, and the principal account of his career derives from later hagiographical tradition associated with the abbey of Santa Maria di Lucedio. According to that tradition he was born of a family of some standing in Bologna and entered the Benedictine community of Santo Stefano in his native city, embracing the monastic life in the spirit of the tenth-century Benedictine revival.

Seeking a more austere eremitical existence, Bononius left Italy for the East. Hagiographical sources relate that he made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and thereafter lived as a hermit in Egypt, in the desert tradition associated with the fathers of monastic Egypt and the region of Cairo. Some accounts add that he was for a time held captive by Muslim authorities and later released, and that he visited Mount Sinai. These Eastern episodes, while central to his legend, cannot be independently corroborated in detail from surviving non-hagiographical records of the period, and should be treated as the substance of his cultic biography rather than as fully verified itinerary.

In the early years of the eleventh century Bononius returned to Italy. He was appointed abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria di Lucedio, near Trino in the territory of Vercelli in Piedmont. The house had reportedly fallen into a state of relaxation, and Bononius is credited with restoring regular observance and monastic discipline. He governed the community until his death and was remembered for personal austerity, care of the monks, and a reputation for holiness that attracted local veneration. The abbey later passed to the Cistercians in the twelfth century, well after his lifetime; his own observance and office were Benedictine.

Bononius died at Lucedio on 30 August 1026, according to the date preserved in his cult, and was buried at the abbey. His memory was kept in the local calendar of the diocese of Vercelli and in Benedictine martyrologies; his feast is observed on 30 August. He belongs to the large number of medieval monastic saints whose cult arose by popular acclaim and episcopal recognition rather than by a formal process of canonization in the later Roman sense. Beyond his association with Lucedio and the Benedictine order, no widely attested list of specific patronages has been established in the historical record.
