Biography

Short Description

Abbot Deusdedit was a Benedictine monk who in the early ninth century became abbot of Monte Cassino, the monastery founded by Saint Benedict of Nursia on a mountain above Cassino in Campania in southern Italy. Almost nothing is recorded of his birth, parentage, or formation. The sources that mention him are monastic notices and the liturgical books of the Roman Church; they do not supply a year or place of birth, and they do not preserve any writings or administrative acts that can be attributed to him with certainty. He belongs to the succession of abbots who governed Monte Cassino in the decades after the abbey had recovered from earlier Lombard violence and before the still greater disaster of the Saracen sack later in the century.

He is reported to have taken up the abbacy about 828, succeeding an abbot named Apollinaris. Southern Italy at that time was divided among Lombard principalities, Byzantine remnants, and emerging local powers. The Principality of Benevento, under Prince Sicard (reigned 832–839), pursued an aggressive policy toward neighboring cities and ecclesiastical estates. In the course of this expansion Sicard attacked Monte Cassino, plundered the monastery, and carried off Abbot Deusdedit and a number of monks as prisoners.

Tradition, as summarized in the Roman Martyrology, states that Deusdedit was cast into prison by Sicard and that he died there of hunger and misery in 834. The death is thus dated to the same year as the assault, or immediately after it. Because he died in captivity as a direct result of the prince’s violence against the abbey, later Catholic devotion has honoured him as a martyr as well as an abbot. No independent contemporary chronicle confirms every detail, but the episode is consistent with what is otherwise known of Sicard’s harsh rule and of the vulnerability of even great monasteries in ninth-century southern Italy.

The memory of Deusdedit was preserved at Monte Cassino and entered the Roman Martyrology, which commemorates him on 10 October and recalls his imprisonment and death by starvation. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization in the later medieval or modern sense; his cult is of the pre-congregation type, resting on monastic tradition and liturgical reception. No specific patronages of places, trades, or causes are securely attached to his name in the standard directories of saints. He remains an obscure but not wholly forgotten figure: one of the abbots whose suffering illustrates the precarious position of Benedictine monasticism amid the wars of the Lombard south in the ninth century.
