Biography

Short Description

Abbot Eustasius (also rendered Eustace or Eustacius) was a seventh-century monastic superior in the Frankish kingdoms, remembered as the second abbot of Luxeuil in the Vosges, in what is now eastern France. He was a disciple of the Irish missionary Columbanus, who had founded Luxeuil near the end of the sixth century. When King Theuderic II, acting with the dowager Brunhilda, expelled Columbanus from Burgundy in 610, the community elected Eustasius to succeed him. Under his rule the house continued to observe the austere Rule of Columbanus and remained one of the chief monastic centres of Gaul, attracting large numbers of monks and forming missionaries and future bishops.

The principal narrative source is Jonas of Bobbio, writing in the mid-seventh century. Jonas portrays Eustasius as a firm defender of Columbanian custom. During his abbacy, monks of Luxeuil were sent to preach among peoples on the eastern edges of Frankish power, including Bavaria; Eustasius himself is said to have taken part in such journeys. A later crisis involved the monk Agrestius, a former royal notary who entered Luxeuil, subsequently left, and then attacked Irish usages kept at the abbey, notably the form of tonsure and certain liturgical practices. The quarrel was brought before a synod at Mâcon in the mid-620s. Eustasius spoke for the Columbanian tradition; that party prevailed, though the episode shows the friction between Irish monastic practice and Gallic ecclesiastical norms in the early seventh century.

Later hagiography also credits him with healings. The Life of Saint Sadalberga, abbess of Laon, relates that as a child she was cured of blindness through his prayers. Such stories, composed later in the seventh century, reflect the standing he held within the network of Columbanian houses. Precise facts about his birth, family, and youth are not given in contemporary texts; later writers sometimes call him a Burgundian of noble stock, but that claim is not independently verified. He died at Luxeuil, according to the chronology generally received by historians, in 629, and was buried at the abbey he had governed.

His feast has long been kept on 29 March, and he appears in the Roman Martyrology as a saint and abbot, a disciple of Columbanus. After his death Luxeuil remained influential, and the Columbanian movement continued through his disciples. Eustasius belongs to the generation that planted Irish monastic ideals on the Continent and adapted them to Frankish society. Apart from Jonas of Bobbio, related saints’ lives, and martyrological notices, independent documentation is scarce, as is usual for many monastic figures of the early seventh century.
