Biography

Short Description

Saint Hilarion, often called Abbot Hilarion or Hilarion the Great, was a fourth-century Christian hermit and monastic founder traditionally regarded as the originator of organized monastic life in Palestine. The principal ancient narrative of his career is the Life of Hilarion written by Saint Jerome near the end of the fourth century. According to that account, Hilarion was born about 291 at Tabatha, a village a few miles south of Gaza, to pagan parents. As a youth he was sent to Alexandria for a literary education. There he encountered Christianity, received baptism, and was drawn to the eremitical ideal. After hearing of the Egyptian desert father Anthony, he visited him in the inner desert, remained for a short time as his disciple, and then returned to his native region determined to live a similar life in Palestine rather than remain in Egypt.

Upon the death of his parents he distributed his inheritance to the poor and withdrew to a desolate area near Maiuma, the port of Gaza. He occupied a small cell, practiced severe fasting and manual labor, and lived for many years in solitude. Disciples gradually gathered around him, and he organized them into monastic communities; later writers therefore credit him with introducing monasticism into Palestine. Jerome and subsequent tradition ascribe to him numerous miracles, including healings, exorcisms, and the protection of people and crops. The resulting fame attracted crowds of visitors, which conflicted with his desire for hiddenness and led him repeatedly to leave the places where he had become well known.

In his later years Hilarion wandered through Egypt, Sicily, and Dalmatia. Jerome relates that at Epidaurus in Dalmatia he delivered the countryside from a great serpent. He then sailed to Cyprus, lived for a time near Paphos, and afterward withdrew to a more remote location on the island in order to escape visitors. He died in Cyprus in 371, at about eighty years of age. His disciple Hesychius, who had followed him through many of his wanderings, later transferred the body from Cyprus to the monastery Hilarion had founded near Maiuma, where it became a center of local veneration.

Hilarion’s cult was established in both the Eastern and Western churches, and his feast is kept on 21 October. Although Jerome’s biography contains the miraculous and rhetorical features typical of late-antique hagiography and cannot be read as a strictly critical history, it remains the earliest substantial literary witness to the beginnings of Palestinian monasticism. The fifth-century church historian Sozomen, himself from the region of Gaza, also records local memory of Hilarion. Later monks of the Holy Land looked back to him as a foundational abbot and as a model of the desert life adapted to Palestine and Cyprus.
