Biography

Short Description

Honoratus, remembered as abbot of Lérins and later as bishop of Arles, belonged to a Gallo-Roman family of consular rank in the later fourth century. The principal ancient account of his life is the sermon composed by his kinsman and successor Hilary of Arles. According to that tradition, Honoratus and his brother Venantius were converted to Christianity from the pagan milieu of the senatorial aristocracy. They gave away their property and, together with the monk Caprasius, set out toward the East in order to learn monastic practice from the desert tradition. Venantius died on the journey at Methone in Greece. Honoratus then turned back to the West rather than continue alone into Egypt and Syria.

In the early fifth century he settled on a small, then sparsely inhabited island in the Lérins group, off the Mediterranean coast of Provence near present-day Cannes. There he gathered companions and founded a monastery that quickly became one of the most influential religious houses in Gaul. The community joined solitude to a common life and served as a training ground for bishops: Eucherius of Lyon, Lupus of Troyes, Vincent of Lérins, and Hilary himself were among those formed at Lérins. Honoratus governed the island house as abbot, and his reputation for holiness and learning spread through the Gallic church.

Against his own inclination he was called from Lérins to the metropolitan see of Arles, probably in 426 or 427, after the violent death of Bishop Patroclus. As archbishop he continued to live with monastic austerity. His episcopate was short. He died at Arles on 6 January 429 and was buried in that city. Hilary, whom he had prepared for ecclesiastical office, succeeded him and preached the surviving panegyric that remains the chief narrative source for Honoratus’s career.

Veneration of Honoratus began at once. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 16 January. The island of his foundation still bears his name, Île Saint-Honorat, and Lérins remained a major monastic centre for centuries. Later medieval tradition sometimes confused him with other saints of the same name, notably Honoratus of Amiens; the abbot-bishop of Lérins and Arles is a distinct fifth-century figure whose life is anchored in Hilary’s sermon and in the early history of monasticism in Gaul. Precise details of his birthplace and year of birth are not preserved in reliable sources.
