Biography

Short Description

Saint Joannicius, often styled Joannicius the Great and listed in the Roman Martyrology as an abbot, was a Byzantine monk and wonderworker of the eighth and ninth centuries, venerated in both the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church. He was born in the village of Marikat (also spelled Marykatos or Marikata) in Bithynia, in northwestern Asia Minor, then part of the Byzantine Empire. Hagiographical tradition names his parents Myritrikes and Anastaso and describes them as people of modest rural standing. In youth he worked as a herdsman. He later enlisted in the imperial army and served under the iconoclast emperor Constantine V, taking part in campaigns that included fighting against the Bulgars. The lives present him as a man of imposing physical presence who distinguished himself as a soldier before abandoning military life.

After many years of service, conventionally placed around his fortieth year, Joannicius withdrew to Mount Olympus in Bithynia, a principal centre of Byzantine monasticism (distinct from the mountain of the same name in Greece). He received the monastic tonsure at a monastery in that region, often identified as Antidion. The lives relate that, though previously unlettered, he received through prayer the ability to read the Psalter and the Scriptures. He then adopted an eremitical life of severe austerity in the forests and caves of Olympus and the neighbouring mountains, practising prolonged fasting, night vigils, and manual labour. He is described as possessing gifts of prophecy, discernment of thoughts, and miraculous healing. He lived through the second phase of Byzantine Iconoclasm, which began in 815, and, despite his earlier service under an iconoclast emperor, supported the defenders of the holy icons, encouraging confessors and predicting the restoration of icon veneration, which took place in 843.

In later years disciples gathered about him, and he moved between solitude and occasional visits to monastic communities, where he gave spiritual counsel. He is associated in the sources with other monks of the Olympus region. Joannicius died on 4 November 846 and was buried at the monastery of Antidion on Mount Olympus. A Life was composed by a monk named Peter; another recension is associated with the monk Sabas. He is commemorated on 4 November in Eastern Orthodox calendars and appears on the same date in the Roman Martyrology as St. Joannicius, abbot. No extensive list of specific patronages is attached to him in the principal liturgical sources. The precise year of his birth is reported with variation in later compilations, and the principal sources remain Byzantine hagiographical texts of the ninth and tenth centuries, which combine a historical outline with miracle stories typical of the genre. The military career, the withdrawal to Olympus, the stance during Iconoclasm, and the date of death are the elements most consistently attested.
