Biography

Short Description

Saint John Gualbert, known in Italian as Giovanni Gualberto, was an eleventh-century Florentine abbot and monastic founder whose life became a model of conversion, forgiveness, and opposition to simony. He was born in Florence into a noble family customarily identified with the Visdomini. Precise records of his birth year have not survived, and later writers proposed dates in the late tenth century. Raised according to the expectations of the Tuscan aristocracy, he was prepared for a secular career and for the defense of family honor. The turning point of his life, as related in medieval vitae, came after the murder of his brother. Bound by the custom of vendetta, John sought the killer. On Good Friday he met the man, who was unarmed, in a confined passageway. The murderer fell to his knees with arms outstretched in the form of a cross and implored pardon in the name of the crucified Christ. John, struck by the liturgical meaning of the day, forgave him and set aside the duty of revenge.

Hagiographical tradition adds that John then went to pray in the basilica of San Miniato al Monte, overlooking Florence, and that the crucifix there inclined its head toward him as a sign of divine approval. Whether or not the miraculous detail is accepted, it is historically clear that he entered the Benedictine monastery attached to San Miniato. He did not remain there permanently. The abbot of San Miniato was accused of having acquired his office by simony, and John, already committed to a strict reading of canonical discipline, withdrew. He spent time in the orbit of the Camaldolese hermits associated with Saint Romuald, whose combination of eremitical and cenobitic life influenced him. In the wooded valley of Vallombrosa in the Apennines, some miles east of Florence, he established a new community in the second quarter of the eleventh century. The site, whose name means shady valley, gave its name to the Vallumbrosan Congregation.

The monks of Vallombrosa observed the Rule of Saint Benedict with severity. Silence, fasting, and enclosure were stressed, and a large body of conversi, or lay brothers, performed agricultural and external work so that the choir monks could remain more strictly within the cloister. John Gualbert emerged as a leading voice in Tuscany against simony and the worldly possession of church offices. His congregation took part in the public struggles over the see of Florence, most famously in connection with the monk Peter Igneus, who underwent an ordeal by fire to demonstrate the simoniacal status of a Florentine bishop. These actions aligned the Vallumbrosans with the broader eleventh-century reform current that would culminate in the pontificate of Gregory VII, although John himself died in the year of Hildebrand's election. Houses of the congregation multiplied in Tuscany and beyond, including the reformed abbey of San Michele at Passignano in the Chianti hills.

John Gualbert died at Passignano on 12 July 1073 and was buried there. Pope Celestine III canonized him in 1193. His feast day is 12 July. Devotion to him remained strong in Tuscany, and because Vallombrosa was a great forested domain whose monks practiced woodland management, he was later invoked as patron of foresters, of park rangers, and of parks. The Vallumbrosan Congregation continues within the Benedictine confederation. His life was repeatedly retold in medieval and early modern legendaries as an example of mercy prevailing over the code of honor, and of monastic poverty set against the traffic in sacred offices.
