Biography

Short Description

Macarius of Alexandria, also called Macarius the Younger or Macarius the Citizen, was a fourth-century Egyptian Desert Father, priest, and monastic elder. He is distinguished in the sources from his better-known contemporary Macarius the Great (Macarius of Egypt, or Macarius the Elder) by his urban origin: he came from Alexandria, whereas the other Macarius was a villager from Upper Egypt. The principal ancient witness is Palladius of Galatia, who knew him personally and devoted a substantial chapter of the Lausiac History to him; further notices appear in the ecclesiastical histories of Socrates and Sozomen and in the collections of the Apophthegmata Patrum. Later tradition sometimes conflated the two Macarii, so that sayings and miracles attached to one have occasionally been ascribed to the other. He held no episcopal or patriarchal see; the title abbot (hegumen) reflects his standing as a priest and spiritual father among the monks of Nitria and Kellia, not an office in the later canonical sense.

According to Palladius, Macarius had been a merchant in Alexandria—described in some translations as a seller of sweetmeats or confectionery—before his conversion. He received Christian baptism as an adult and then withdrew from the city to the monastic desert of Nitria in Lower Egypt. He later settled at Kellia (the Cells), a more secluded cluster of hermitages lying between Nitria and Scetis, where he lived as an anchorite for many years and was ordained a priest. The sources do not preserve a verified year of birth, nor do they record a wife or children; his adult entry into monastic life and subsequent celibate discipline are what the tradition documents. He belonged to the first generations of organized Egyptian desert monasticism, in the same landscape and decades as Anthony the Great, the two Macarii, and the Pachomian coenobia of the Thebaid.

Palladius and the later hagiographical collections portray Macarius of Alexandria as an extreme ascetic. Anecdotes describe prolonged exposure without shelter, a diet reduced to raw herbs or a few crumbs of bread, nights spent standing in prayer, and a spirit of competitive self-denial toward other monks. One well-known story has him visiting the Pachomian monastery at Tabenna in disguise in order to observe the coenobitic rule; his hidden austerities so outstripped those of the brethren that Pachomius, after a revelation of his identity, asked him to depart lest the monks be discouraged. Other narratives credit him with discernment of spirits, authority over demons, and acts of healing. These accounts belong to the genre of desert spiritual portraiture: they illustrate an ideal of watchfulness and poverty rather than a chronicle that can be verified event by event. Historically it is secure that he was a priest-monk of Kellia, a contemporary of Macarius of Egypt, and a figure already famous in Palladius’s lifetime.

Macarius of Alexandria is generally held to have died in the last decade of the fourth century, most often dated to about 394 or 395, almost certainly in the Nitrian desert and by tradition in his cell at Kellia. The precise place of burial is not recorded in the early sources. Veneration of him as a saint is ancient and pre-congregational; he appears in the Roman Martyrology on 2 January as abbot in Egypt, and in the Eastern Orthodox and Byzantine calendars on 19 January, a date he shares in many menologia with Macarius the Great. Coptic synaxaria also remember him among the desert fathers, though the two Macarii are not always kept distinct in popular commemoration. No reliable list of later patronages (places, trades, or causes) can be verified from early or medieval sources. What remains historically firm is his identity as an Alexandrian convert who became a priest-anchorite of Kellia, his place among the Nitrian Desert Fathers of the fourth century, and the early church’s memory of him as a monastic saint.
