Biography

Short Description

Saint Nicetas of Medikion, also called Nicetas the Confessor, was a Byzantine monk and abbot of the early ninth century, remembered as a defender of the veneration of icons in the second iconoclastic controversy. He was born in Caesarea of Bithynia in northwestern Asia Minor; the year of his birth is not recorded in surviving sources. Hagiographical tradition states that his mother died eight days after his birth and that his father, Philaretos, then entered the monastic life. Nicetas was raised by his grandmother and from childhood is described as inclined to prayer, fasting, and the monastic vocation.

As a young man he entered the Monastery of Medikion on the Bithynian Olympus, a house founded by Saint Nicephorus of Medikion. Under that abbot he received the monastic tonsure and was later ordained priest. After Nicephorus died, the community elected Nicetas as abbot. He is portrayed as a strict ascetic and a careful superior, and Medikion became known in Bithynia as a center of iconodule conviction.

When Emperor Leo V the Armenian revived imperial iconoclasm, Nicetas refused to subscribe to decrees against the icons or to communicate with iconoclast hierarchs. He was imprisoned, pressured to recant, and sent into exile, remaining a confessor through Leo’s reign (813–820). After Leo’s death, Emperor Michael II released many imprisoned iconodules but did not restore public veneration of images. Nicetas therefore spent his last years in relative withdrawal rather than in a fully public abbacy under an emperor still unfriendly to icons.

He died on 3 April 824. The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates him on that date, and he is also noted in some Western martyrologies. Tradition associates his relics with the Monastery of Medikion. No reliable source gives a birth year, a list of patronages, or a later-style papal act of canonization; his cult rests on the ninth-century Life and on liturgical commemoration as abbot and confessor. He was not bishop of Rome or a patriarch, and as a monk from youth he is not recorded as having married or had children.
