Biography

Short Description

Saint Nonnosus (also rendered Nonosius or Nonnoso) was a sixth-century Italian monk whose holiness and miracles were recorded by Pope Gregory the Great in Book I of the Dialogues, composed near the end of that century. Gregory presents him as prior (praepositus) of the monastery of Saint Silvester on Monte Soratte (Mount Soracte), a prominent isolated mountain north of Rome in Latium, in the district of the later town of Sant'Oreste. The house stood in a landscape already associated with early Christian eremitical and monastic life and with legends concerning Pope Sylvester I. Gregory’s account, based on testimony he attributed to contemporaries such as a priest named Fortunatus, is the principal near-contemporary source for Nonnosus and the reason his cult entered the wider Latin tradition. Precise dates of birth and death are not given in that source, nor is a place of origin; later martyrologies and hagiographical compilations sometimes assign a death around the 570s, but that figure is traditional rather than documented.

According to Gregory, Nonnosus lived under an abbot named Anastasius, whom the Dialogues portray as severe. Nonnosus is commended for patience, obedience, and trust in God rather than for administrative detail. Gregory relates several miracle stories that later defined the saint’s reputation. When a great boulder blocked the monastic garden and the community could not shift it, Nonnosus prayed and the stone was moved, so that the ground could be cultivated. When the monastery’s oil failed, he set an empty vessel before the Lord and it was found filled. A glass lamp that fell from a height in his presence did not break. These episodes are typical of Gregory’s Dialogues, which use monastic wonder-working to illustrate providence and virtue; they should be read as the form in which sixth-century Roman clerical memory preserved Nonnosus, not as independently corroborated incident reports.

Later tradition regularly styles him abbot, either of Saint Silvester on Monte Soratte or of another house in the Sabine country, and he is entered in the Roman Martyrology on 2 September as abbot on Mount Soracte, with explicit appeal to Gregory’s witness. Whether he actually succeeded Anastasius as abbot is not stated in the Dialogues, which consistently describe him as prior. He belonged to the world of central Italian coenobitic monasticism in the age of Benedict of Nursia; later Catholic reference works commonly list him as a Benedictine, though Gregory does not name a rule. As a professed monk he is treated as celibate and without issue. He was neither pope nor patriarch.

The later cult is geographically scattered and historically difficult to unify. Besides the Soracte commemoration, devotion and relic claims appear in Apulia (including Monte Sant’Angelo) and, from the early modern period, in the eastern Alps: a tomb and inscription associated with Nonnosus were reported at Molzbichl in Carinthia, and relics were venerated at Freising in Bavaria. Historians have long noted the possibility that more than one figure, or successive translations of bones, were gathered under a single name. No reliable contemporary record fixes his burial place, and the original monastic site on Monte Soratte itself underwent ruin and rebuilding over the centuries. What can be said with caution is that a monk named Nonnosus, remembered as prior of Saint Silvester on Monte Soratte and as a wonder-worker, was already a recognized holy man in Roman clerical circles by the 590s, and that the Latin Church thereafter kept his feast on 2 September.
