Biography

Short Description

Pachomius the Great, known in Coptic as Pakhom and often called Abba Pachom or Abbot Pachomius, was a fourth-century Egyptian monk widely regarded as the founder of Christian cenobitic monasticism, that is, of organized communal monastic life under a shared rule and a common superior. He was born of pagan parents in Upper Egypt, in the Thebaid, in the district of Esna (ancient Latopolis, Coptic Snê), toward the end of the third century; later writers conventionally give the year 292. As a young man he was conscripted into the Roman army, probably during the unrest associated with Maximinus Daia, and was held with other recruits at Thebes. Local Christians brought food and comfort to the conscripts, an act of charity that impressed him. After his discharge he sought Christian instruction, received baptism, and soon withdrew from ordinary life. He placed himself under the aged hermit Palamon near Seneset (Chenoboskion) and for some years practiced the severe eremitical discipline then typical of the Egyptian desert.

Around 320, according to the traditional chronology of his Lives, Pachomius established a community at Tabennisi on the Nile in the Thebaid. Unlike the loosely associated colonies of hermits associated with Antony the Great, the Tabennesiote monks lived together, shared labor and meals, prayed in common, and submitted to a written rule and to the authority of an abbot. Hagiographical tradition presents this step as the fruit of a heavenly vision calling him to gather brothers into a koinonia. Disciples came in large numbers. He later founded or received further houses, of which the monastery of Pbow (Pabau, near modern Faw Qibli) became the mother house of the federation. By the time of his death the Pachomian congregation comprised several monasteries for men—among them Tabennisi, Pbow, Sheneset, Thmoushons, and Tse—and at least two communities for women, one of them associated with his sister Mary. Later Lives give very large totals for the number of monks; such figures are hagiographical and should be treated with caution, but they attest to the rapid growth and reputation of the koinonia.

Pachomius composed a monastic rule, originally in Coptic. Versions and translations survive in Greek, in the Latin rendering made by Jerome in the early fifth century, and in other languages. The rule regulated clothing, food, manual work (agriculture, crafts, and boat traffic on the Nile), liturgical prayer, silence, the reception of newcomers, and the correction of faults. It provided for a hierarchy of house superiors and for periodic assemblies of the whole congregation. The Pachomian system became a principal model for later monastic legislators, including Basil of Caesarea in the Greek East and, indirectly, Benedict of Nursia in the Latin West. Pachomius himself remained a layman; the Lives present him as declining ordination to the priesthood. He had dealings with the wider Church of Egypt, including the circle of Athanasius of Alexandria, who visited the Thebaid and esteemed the Pachomian monks during the Arian controversies of the mid-fourth century.

Pachomius died of an infectious disease described as plague at Pbow, traditionally on 9 May 348 (some modern scholars prefer 346). He had already designated successors to govern the koinonia. Several recensions of his Life—Sahidic and Bohairic Coptic, Greek, Arabic, and Latin—together with collections of instructions and letters, preserve his memory. He is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox (including Coptic), and Anglican traditions. His principal feast is kept on 9 May in the West and on 15 May in the Byzantine calendar; the Coptic Church commemorates him on 14 Pashons. His lasting importance lies in the durable institutional form he gave to communal monasticism in late antique Egypt, a form that shaped Christian monastic life in both East and West.
