Biography

Short Description

Romaric, known in Latin as Romaricus and in French as Romary, was a Frankish nobleman of Austrasia whose life belongs to the monastic expansion of the early seventh century. No contemporary charter or chronicle records his birth, and the year of his birth is unknown. The principal source for his career is an early medieval vita composed in the milieu of Remiremont, supplemented by martyrological notices and the later memory of the abbey. That tradition places him among the aristocracy attached to the court of Theudebert II, king of Austrasia from 595 to 612. In the factional violence of the Merovingian courts his family is said to have been ruined—his father put to death and the patrimony seized—before Romaric recovered a position as a royal leude. He thus represents the class of great landowners who, after conversion, turned their estates into monasteries and thereby anchored Irish-Frankish monasticism in the countryside of eastern Gaul.

Conversion came through Saint Amatus (Amé), a monk formed at Saint-Maurice d’Agaune and connected with the Columbanian abbey of Luxeuil. Under Amatus’s influence Romaric left the palace, gave alms from his fortune, and took the monastic habit at Luxeuil while Eustace, the successor of Saint Columbanus, was abbot. Luxeuil then observed the Rule of Columbanus, with its emphasis on penance, obedience, and liturgical regularity. Trained in that school, Romaric joined Amatus in founding a new house on Romaric’s own mountain estate of Habendum in the Vosges, a forested region of Austrasia. The foundation is conventionally dated to about 620, in the reign of Chlothar II after the reunification of the Frankish kingdoms.

The monastery, soon called Romarici Mons and later Remiremont, was organized as a double community, a form well attested among seventh-century Frankish aristocratic foundations. Nuns occupied the hilltop (the site later called the Saint-Mont); monks lived in the valley, providing priestly service and sharing a round of perpetual psalmody (laus perennis) modelled on Agaune. Amatus was the first abbot. The women’s monastery attracted daughters of the nobility; according to the hagiographical tradition of the house, daughters of Romaric himself were among the first to take the veil there, which implies that he had been married before his conversion, though the name of his wife is not preserved in reliable sources.

When Amatus died, probably in the later 620s, Romaric succeeded as abbot and governed Remiremont until his own death. He is remembered as a founder who endowed and stabilized the community rather than as an author or itinerant missionary. He died at Remiremont on 8 December 653 and was buried in his monastery. Later abbatial lists name Adelphius among his successors. Over subsequent centuries Remiremont became one of the notable abbeys of the Vosges; the female community eventually developed into a chapter of noble canonesses, while the founder’s tomb and relics remained a focus of local devotion.

Romaric’s feast day is 8 December, the date given by the Roman Martyrology and the monastic tradition of Remiremont. He was venerated as a saint through local cult and liturgical commemoration rather than by a formal papal canonization of the type that became common in the later Middle Ages. Historical knowledge of him is modest and depends on hagiography: the outlines of court service, conversion at Luxeuil, the Vosges foundation, a long abbacy, and death in 653 are consistently reported, but many personal details, including his exact birthplace and the identity of his spouse, cannot be verified from independent seventh-century documents.
