Biography

Short Description

Abbot Suranus, sometimes called Suran in later English notices, was a sixth-century monastic superior in Italy whose life is known almost solely from a short account given by Pope Saint Gregory the Great. Gregory included the story in his Dialogues, a collection of Italian hagiographical narratives written in the early 590s. Suranus was abbot of a monastery located in the district of Sura, a place generally identified by later writers with the territory of Sora in Campania. No source records his parentage, the year or place of his birth, the date of his profession, or the monastic rule observed in his community.

The historical setting is the Lombard invasion of Italy, which began in 568 and brought repeated raids into the central and southern provinces. Gregory relates that when Suranus received word that Lombard warriors were drawing near, he distributed the whole of the monastery’s remaining treasure and stores to the poor of the surrounding country. He did so, Gregory implies, both from charity and from a desire that the goods should not become booty. The house was left without gold, silver, or other valuables.

The Lombards arrived, found nothing worth taking, and killed the abbot. Gregory presents the killing without additional legendary detail, offering it as an instance of a religious superior who had already given away his community’s wealth and who then suffered death at the hands of the invaders. The episode cannot be assigned a precise calendar year; it belongs to the period of Lombard activity in Campania during the later decades of the sixth century, within living memory when Gregory wrote.

Subsequent tradition has sometimes numbered Suranus among Benedictine abbots on geographical and chronological grounds, yet Gregory himself is silent on the rule. No feast day of general observance, no patronage, and no papal decree of canonization or beatification are documented in the major martyrologies or official liturgical books. His cult, if it existed locally in the region of Sora, left little trace. The historical figure therefore remains an obscure Italian abbot of the Lombard era, remembered for a single act of radical charity and for the violent death that followed it, as recorded by one of the principal witnesses of sixth-century Italian monasticism.
