Biography

Short Description

Abdon and Sennen (also rendered Abdus and Sennes, Abdo and Sennes, or in Spanish Abdón y Senén) are a pair of early Christian martyrs whose cult in Rome is securely attested by the mid-fourth century, though almost nothing about their earthly lives can be established from contemporary historical evidence. The earliest firm witness is the Depositio martyrum in the Chronography of 354, which records their commemoration on 30 July and their burial in the cemetery of Pontianus (ad Ursum Pileatum) on the Via Portuensis. Later legendary Acts, composed long after the events they claim to describe and regarded by historians as largely conventional hagiography, present them as Persians of noble or even princely rank who had embraced Christianity. In that tradition they devoted themselves to recovering and burying the bodies of martyrs, were arrested for this charity, and were brought in chains to Rome during an imperial persecution.

The Roman Martyrology and the medieval Passio place their death in the reign of the emperor Decius (249–251). The legend relates that they were exposed to wild beasts in an amphitheatre, that the animals refused to harm them, and that they were then beaten with leaded whips and beheaded. These details belong to a familiar repertoire of martyr narratives and cannot be independently verified; even the association with Decius remains traditional rather than demonstrated. What is historically certain is that by the fourth century a shrine existed at their tomb in the Catacomb of Pontianus. A well-known fresco there, generally dated to the sixth or seventh century, depicts the two saints in Persian dress, confirming both the antiquity of the cult and the early tradition of their eastern origin. In the ninth century Pope Gregory IV (827–844) translated their relics from the decaying catacomb to the church of San Marco Evangelista al Campidoglio in Rome, where they continued to be venerated.

Their feast on 30 July stood in the General Roman Calendar for many centuries and was reduced to optional or local observance in the calendar reform of 1969; it is still kept in numerous particular calendars. A vigorous cult took root in the Iberian Peninsula, especially in the former Kingdom of Murcia. There Abdon and Sennen became known as the Santos de la Piedra and were invoked to protect harvests from hail. The town of Calasparra adopted them as patrons, and an annual pilgrimage and festival in their honour remain important in that region. Relics or reputedly authentic relics were distributed in the Middle Ages to churches in Italy, France, and Spain, which further spread their names. Iconography typically shows them as young men in short tunics or in Persian costume, often holding palms of martyrdom, crowns, or the instruments of their passion, and sometimes accompanied by lions or other beasts that would not attack them.

Because the documentary record is so thin, dates of birth, family circumstances, and even the precise year and manner of death remain unknown. They held no recorded ecclesiastical office, belonged to no religious order, and are not documented as having been married or as having had children. Their standing in Christian memory rests on the antiquity of the Roman cult at Pontianus, on the later legendary accounts that made them models of care for the dead and of constancy under persecution, and on the durable popular devotion, especially in Spain, that attached their names to the protection of the fields.
