Biography

Short Description

Abel of Reims, also called Abel of Lobbes, was an eighth-century monk and putative archbishop whose life is known only from fragmentary Frankish and monastic sources. Later medieval tradition describes him as a Scottus, a term that in this period usually meant a Gael from Ireland or western Scotland, but neither a birthplace nor a year of birth can be established. He entered the Abbey of Lobbes (Laubacum) in Hainaut, a Benedictine house in the Frankish kingdom, and is associated with that community for the rest of his recorded career. Nothing reliable is known of his family, education, or early offices.

In 744 a reform council at Soissons, acting in the context of Saint Boniface’s campaign to restore canonical order in the Frankish church, named Abel archbishop of Reims. The see, together with Trier, was then in the hands of Milo, an aristocratic warrior-cleric whom the reformers regarded as unfit. Pope Zachary’s correspondence with Boniface from this time alludes to the disordered state of Reims. Despite the conciliar nomination, Abel never obtained effective possession of the archdiocese. Milo kept the temporalities, and it is uncertain whether Abel was even consecrated. Contemporary evidence that he actually governed Reims is slight; later episcopal lists include him for a brief span (about 744–747), but modern historians treat the tenure as nominal or abortive.

Unable to take up the see, Abel withdrew to Lobbes. Some later writers call him abbot there, but the mid-eighth-century abbatial succession at Lobbes is poorly documented and the claim is not secure. He spent his remaining years in monastic retirement. The date of his death is not recorded with certainty: later martyrologies and local tradition offer figures around 751 and 764, neither of which can be verified from contemporary evidence. He is believed to have died at Lobbes and to have been buried at the abbey.

Abel was venerated as a saint in the region, especially at Lobbes and in connection with the church of Reims. His feast is kept on 5 August. He was never the object of a formal papal canonization; his cult belongs to the age of local and popular recognition of sanctity. He is not known to have married, which is consistent with his monastic state, and no children are recorded. He was neither pope nor patriarch, and no specific patronages beyond the local cult are firmly attested in the surviving sources. The scarcity of eighth-century documentation means that much of his biography remains conjectural.
