Biography

Short Description

Saint Abercius, also called Abercius of Hierapolis and sometimes identified with Avircius Marcellus, was a Christian bishop of Hierapolis (Hieropolis) in Phrygia, in the Roman province of Asia in Asia Minor, during the second century. He is among the earliest named bishops of that region for whom a substantial contemporary text survives. Nothing reliable is known of his parentage, place of birth, or the exact years of his life; later dates such as a death in 167 rest on a legendary vita and should not be treated as established chronology. The chief historical witness is a metrical Greek epitaph of twenty-two verses, the Inscription of Abercius, which he had prepared for his own tomb at the age of seventy-two. Fragments of the original stone were found in 1883 by William Mitchell Ramsay near Kelendres in Phrygia Salutaris (in what is now western Turkey), and the complete text had already been copied into a later Greek Life of Abercius. The surviving pieces were given to Pope Leo XIII and are kept in the Museo Pio Cristiano of the Vatican Museums.

Written in the first person, the epitaph presents Abercius as a disciple of a holy shepherd who taught him faithful writings, and it recounts extensive travel in the service of that faith. He describes a journey to Rome, where he saw a queen golden-robed and golden-shoed, language that Christian interpreters have long read as a reference to the Church or to the imperial court. He further records travel through Syria as far as Nisibis beyond the Euphrates, the company of fellow believers, and the sharing of a fish from a fountain together with mixed wine and bread. That imagery is widely understood as eucharistic and as an early, still somewhat veiled use of the Ichthys symbol for Christ. The style is allusive rather than openly creedal, which fits a late second-century setting in which Christians in Asia Minor often wrote with reserve. Modern scholarship generally places the inscription in the later second century, which makes it one of the oldest surviving Christian inscriptions of any length and a document of high importance for the history of the Eucharist, of Christian travel, and of the church in Phrygia.

Eusebius of Caesarea, in the fifth book of the Ecclesiastical History, mentions an Avircius Marcellus in connection with an anti-Montanist writer active in Phrygia toward the end of the second century. Many historians have identified that figure with the bishop of the epitaph, though the identification, while plausible, is not beyond dispute. A much fuller narrative, the Greek Vita Abercii, was composed probably in the fourth or fifth century. It portrays Abercius as a wonder-working bishop who preached against pagan cults in Hierapolis, healed the sick, and was summoned to Rome by the emperor Marcus Aurelius to deliver the emperor’s daughter Lucilla from a demon. After further journeys in Syria and Mesopotamia the legend has him return to Hierapolis, compose his epitaph, and die there. Historians treat the Vita as pious fiction that nonetheless preserved an accurate copy of the inscription and shows the honor in which Abercius was held in later Phrygian Christianity. No reliable ancient source records a wife, children, or membership in a monastic order; he is known simply as a second-century bishop.

Abercius is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church and in the Roman Catholic Church. In the East he is styled Equal-to-the-Apostles and Wonderworker, titles that depend on the legendary missionary and miracle accounts rather than on the spare testimony of the epitaph. His feast is kept on 22 October in both traditions. Specific patronages of places, professions, or causes are not securely documented in the principal martyrologies and liturgical books. What can be said with confidence is that a bishop named Abercius, aged seventy-two when he prepared his tomb, left one of the most important early Christian inscriptions, that he was associated with Hierapolis in Phrygia, and that the later church remembered him as a missionary bishop of the age of the Antonines.
