Biography

Short Description

Abraham of Bulgaria, known in Slavic sources as Avraamy Bolgarsky, was a Christian martyr of the early thirteenth century, venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church and especially in the Russian Orthodox tradition. He belonged to the Volga Bulgars, a Turkic people whose state, Volga Bulgaria, lay along the middle Volga and Kama rivers in the region of present-day Tatarstan. Born into a Muslim family, he became a merchant. Trade regularly brought Volga Bulgarian merchants into the principalities of Rus', and it was in that Christian milieu that he encountered Orthodox Christianity, converted from Islam, and was baptized with the name Abraham. Surviving accounts do not record the year or precise place of his birth, nor the names of his parents, and they do not describe him as a monk or cleric.

The tradition presents him as a layman who, after baptism, did not conceal his new faith and was known for charity. On returning to Bolghar, the political and commercial centre of Volga Bulgaria, he was accused by local Muslims of apostasy. They demanded that he renounce Christianity and resume Islam. He refused. He was then tortured and put to death on 1 April 1229. Rus' merchants who were in the city recovered his body and buried it in the Christian cemetery at Bolghar, which indicates that a recognized Christian burial ground for foreign traders existed there in the early thirteenth century.

In 1230 Grand Prince Georgy (Yuri) Vsevolodovich of Vladimir caused the relics to be translated from Bolghar to his capital. They were received in Vladimir and placed in the Dormition Cathedral; they were later associated with the Knyaginin Monastery (the Princess's Convent) in the same city. Local veneration began soon after the translation. Abraham was commemorated as a martyr and convert, and his name entered the liturgical calendars of the Russian Church. His principal feast is 1 April, the traditional date of his death; a second commemoration on 9 March recalls the translation of the relics. He was not Bishop of Rome or a patriarch, and no individual canonizer in the later papal sense is named in the sources; his glorification belongs to local Orthodox veneration of the thirteenth century and after.

Little can be established about his family, marriage, or children. Historical knowledge of his life depends almost entirely on hagiographical tradition, liturgical texts, and later synaxaria; no contemporary Muslim or Latin chronicle supplies an independent biography. His martyrdom occurred only a few years before the Mongol campaigns that destroyed Volga Bulgaria as an independent state in the later 1230s. In Orthodox memory he remains a convert-martyr of the Volga frontier and a saint associated with the city of Vladimir, where his relics were long venerated.
