Biography

Short Description

Abraham the Great of Kashkar, known in Syriac as Mar Abraham of Kashkar, was a monk of the Church of the East and the central figure in the East Syriac monastic revival of the sixth century. Traditional accounts place his birth in 492 in Kashkar (also spelled Kaskar), an important episcopal city in Beth Aramaye in southern Mesopotamia, then under Sasanian rule. He was educated at the School of Nisibis, the principal theological academy of the Church of the East, where the Antiochene exegetical tradition, especially the teaching of Theodore of Mopsuestia, formed the curriculum. That training set him within the intellectual mainstream of the church recognized by the Sasanian state as the Christian community of the empire.

Seeking a stricter ascetic life than was then usual in Mesopotamia, Abraham travelled to Egypt to observe the desert fathers. He is reported to have stayed among the monks of Scetis in the Wadi al-Natrun and to have studied both eremitical and coenobitic practice. Egyptian monastic custom had already reached the Syriac world through earlier figures such as Mar Awgin, but by Abraham’s day East Syriac monastic houses were widely described as undisciplined, including the presence of married inmates. After returning from Egypt he lived as a solitary before gathering disciples.

About 570–571 he founded a monastery on Mount Izla, the range north of Nisibis, which became known as the Great Monastery (the Monastery of Abraham of Kashkar). There he introduced a rule requiring celibacy, a distinctive monastic tonsure and habit, manual labour, enclosure, and regular liturgical prayer. The legislation was meant to mark monks off from the married parish clergy of the Church of the East and to plant an Egyptian-style coenobium on Sasanian soil. His successor Dadisho later expanded the rule. From Mount Izla, colonies of monks spread through Mesopotamia and onto the Iranian plateau, so that Abraham was remembered as the father of a reformed monastic family rather than only as a local abbot.

He died in 586 at the monastery he had founded and was buried there. In the next generation the Great Monastery was associated with major East Syriac figures, including Babai the Great, who entered the community after Abraham’s death and helped define Church of the East christology in the early seventh century. Abraham is venerated as a saint in the Assyrian Church of the East, the Ancient Church of the East, and the Chaldean Catholic Church; his feast is kept on 6 January. Notices of his life depend largely on later East Syriac monastic historiography, especially the tradition represented by Ishodnah of Basra and Thomas of Marga, and precise details of his early years remain sparse outside that hagiographical stream.
