Biography

Short Description

Saint Abudemius (also rendered Abudemio) is an early Christian martyr commemorated in the Roman Martyrology. The martyrology records that he suffered on the island of Tenedos during the persecution under the emperor Diocletian. Tenedos is a small island in the northeastern Aegean Sea, off the coast of the Troad near ancient Troy; in antiquity it belonged to the Roman province of Asia. The notice is extremely brief: it names the place of his passion and the imperial persecution in which he died, but it does not give a precise year, the form of execution, or any account of a trial.

The Great Persecution associated with Diocletian began with imperial edicts in 303 and continued, with varying intensity, into the early years of the fourth century. Christians were required to sacrifice to the traditional gods of Rome; refusal could bring confiscation, imprisonment, torture, and death. Abudemius is remembered as one of those who would not comply. Beyond that context, no contemporary passio or other narrative source for his life has been preserved. Later hagiographical tradition does not appear to have supplied a developed legend of the kind attached to better-known martyrs, and modern notices therefore rest almost entirely on the martyrological entry.

His feast is kept on 15 July. The cult seems to have been local to Tenedos and was subsequently received into the wider Latin calendars through the Martyrology. He is not recorded as a bishop, as a member of a religious order, or as the holder of any other ecclesiastical office, nor is he associated in the sources with particular patronages of places, professions, or causes. Whether he was a native of the island or only martyred there is not stated in the surviving notice.

Because the documentary base is so thin, Abudemius remains an obscure figure even among the martyrs of the Diocletianic period. His presence in the Roman Martyrology nonetheless attests to an ancient tradition of veneration on Tenedos and to the Church’s practice of commemorating those who died for the Christian faith in the early fourth century, even when almost nothing of their individual biographies has come down to us.
