Biography

Short Description

Abundius of Como, also known as Abondius, Abundias, or Sant'Abbondio in Italian, was a fifth-century bishop of Como in northern Italy. Later tradition identifies Thessalonica, in the Roman province of Macedonia, as his place of birth. Little can be established with certainty about his early life or education. He belongs to the generation of Western churchmen who lived through the Christological controversies that followed the Council of Ephesus (431) and who looked to Pope Leo I for doctrinal leadership. He is commemorated as a saint in the Catholic Church, with a feast on 2 April.

Abundius succeeded Saint Amanzio as bishop of Como, an office he is generally held to have taken up around the middle of the fifth century. Como then lay in the ecclesiastical orbit of Milan. As bishop he was remembered in later accounts as a learned opponent of Arianism and of the Christological errors associated with Nestorius and Eutyches. Contemporary documentation of his local pastoral work is sparse; his historical profile rests chiefly on his involvement in the wider affairs of the Church rather than on a detailed local vita.

Pope Leo I employed Abundius as a legate. He was sent to the imperial court at Constantinople in the period around 450, in the context of the disputes that followed the Second Council of Ephesus of 449. He then served among the papal representatives at the Council of Chalcedon in 451, which defined the doctrine that Christ is one person in two natures, divine and human. Participation in that council is the most securely attested episode of his career. He is also linked in the tradition with a synod at Milan in the same era.

Traditional sources place his death at Como in 469. He was buried in the basilica of the Apostles Peter and Paul outside the city; in the eleventh century that church was rebuilt in the Romanesque style and dedicated to him as the Basilica of Sant'Abbondio, where his relics have been venerated. He is the patron saint of the city and diocese of Como. The surviving evidence for his life is limited, and many particulars in later hagiography cannot be independently verified; the outline given here follows the main lines of the historical and liturgical tradition.
