Biography

Short Description

Adalard of Corbie, whose name also appears as Adalhard, Adelard, or Adalardus, was a Frankish aristocrat, Benedictine monk, and abbot whose life spanned the reigns of Charlemagne and Louis the Pious. He was born in the mid-eighth century into the Carolingian family itself, as a son of Bernard, an illegitimate son of Charles Martel, and was therefore a cousin of Charlemagne. Several of his brothers and sisters likewise entered the religious life: Wala became abbot of Corbie and of the newly founded house of Corvey; Theodrada became abbess of Notre-Dame at Soissons; others of the sibling group, including Gundrada and Bernarius, were also associated with monastic or court circles. Adalard was educated at the royal court, where he acquired a reputation for learning, rhetorical skill, and a close knowledge of palatine administration that later writers still associated with his name. Precise details of his birth, including the exact year and place, are not securely documented in contemporary sources and are reconstructed only approximately by later tradition.

In his youth he left the court and took the monastic habit at Corbie, the great Benedictine abbey on the Somme in Picardy, which had long enjoyed Carolingian patronage. Near-contemporary tradition linked his conversion to disgust at the repudiation of Charlemagne's Lombard wife Desiderata and the king's subsequent marriage to Hildegard, an episode that also had implications for Frankish-Lombard politics. At Corbie he submitted to the Rule of Saint Benedict. Despite his desire for withdrawal, his birth and abilities brought him to the abbacy of Corbie and to continued service of the Frankish ruler. He acted as counsellor and as missus dominicus, and he spent time in Italy after the Frankish conquest of the Lombard kingdom, in connection with the government of Charlemagne's son Pepin of Italy and, later, with the affairs of Bernard of Italy. He was regarded as a man of both monastic discipline and public experience, and statutes connected with his rule at Corbie remain an important witness to Carolingian monastic organization, liturgy, and economic management.

The death of Charlemagne in 814 and the accession of Louis the Pious exposed Adalard to the factional conflicts of the new reign. He was deprived of his abbey and sent into exile, passing a number of years at other monastic houses, including a period associated with the island monastery of Noirmoutier and time in Italy. He was restored in the early 820s. Together with Wala he then played a central role in establishing the monastery of Corvey (Nova Corbeia) in Saxony, a foundation intended to extend Corbie's observance and to support pastoral and missionary work among the Saxons. A description of the ordering of the royal palace, later reworked by Hincmar of Reims in the treatise De ordine palatii, was attributed to Adalard's court experience. These activities place him among the principal monastic statesmen of the later Carolingian court, at once a reformer of observance and a participant in dynastic politics.

Adalard died at Corbie on 2 January in the mid-820s, the year being given in the sources as 826 or 827, and was buried at the abbey he had ruled. Paschasius Radbertus, who had known him and who later became abbot of Corbie, wrote a Vita Adalhardi that combined hagiographical portraiture with a defence of Adalard's memory amid the political controversies of Louis's reign. The vita emphasizes his charity, especially toward the poor, his personal austerity, his learning, and his care for monastic discipline. Cultus developed at Corbie and Corvey, and his feast came to be observed on 2 January. He belongs to the group of Carolingian monastic saints whose veneration remained largely regional and Benedictine rather than the product of a later papal canonization process. Surviving evidence for his career is fuller than for many eighth- and ninth-century abbots, yet important chronological details, including the exact year of his birth and some points in the chronology of his exiles and restorations, remain uncertain.
