Biography

Short Description

Adalbert of Prague was born Vojtěch, a son of the Slavník princely house, at Libice nad Cidlinou in eastern Bohemia in the mid-tenth century, conventionally dated to 956. The Slavníks controlled a large domain that rivalled the Přemyslid dukes of Prague, and Adalbert’s father Slavník and mother Střezislava belonged to the highest Bohemian aristocracy. Several brothers, among them Soběslav, and a half-brother Radim (later known as Gaudentius) shared his upbringing. In keeping with the family’s ambitions and with growing ties between Bohemia and the Ottonian Empire, the boy was sent to the cathedral school of Magdeburg. There Archbishop Adalbert of Magdeburg became his confirmation sponsor and conferred on him the name Adalbert; the young Bohemian remained in Saxony until the archbishop’s death in 981, acquiring a Latin education unusual among Czech nobles of his generation.

After returning to Bohemia he was ordained and served in the clergy of Prague. When Bishop Dietmar died, Adalbert was chosen as his successor in 982 and was consecrated bishop on 29 June 983 at Verona by Willigis, archbishop of Mainz, the metropolitan of the see. He found a diocese still weakly Christianized: many nobles practised polygamy, a number of priests were married, and Christian captives were sold into slavery. Adalbert preached against these customs, tried to enforce clerical discipline, and promoted Benedictine monasticism, establishing the monastery of Břevnov near Prague during his second period in the see. His reforming programme alienated Duke Boleslaus II and important lay families who profited from older customs. Discouraged by resistance and by the poverty of his diocese, he left Bohemia around 989, travelled to Rome, and was received by Pope John XV. At the monastery of Saints Boniface and Alexius on the Aventine Hill he took the Benedictine habit and lived for a time as a monk.

Papal authority and the Bohemian duke soon demanded his return. Adalbert resumed the government of Prague about 992 and continued his efforts at reform, but the political ground was cut from under him in 995. Přemyslid forces attacked Libice and slaughtered the Slavník kindred; most of Adalbert’s brothers perished. Because he was absent he survived, yet he could no longer reside safely in his diocese. He withdrew once more, spent time in Italy and, according to later tradition, undertook missionary work in Hungary. A persistent though poorly documented legend holds that he baptized the Magyar ruler Vajk, the future King Stephen I; modern historians treat that claim with caution. He then accepted the protection of Duke Bolesław I of Poland, who was eager to support missions beyond his northern frontier.

In 997, with Bolesław’s backing, Adalbert set out to preach to the Old Prussians, a Baltic people still adhering to their traditional religion. He was accompanied by his half-brother Radim-Gaudentius and a small group of clerics and interpreters. After landing on the Prussian coast, probably in the region of the Vistula estuary or the Sambian shore, he preached, overturned cult objects, and is reported to have entered a sacred grove. On 23 April 997 pagan Prussians, led according to early narratives by a priest, killed him with a spear. The precise locality remains disputed among later writers, who name sites near present-day Elbląg, Gdańsk, or Tenkitten. Duke Bolesław ransomed the martyr’s body, reputedly paying its weight in gold, and had it interred at Gniezno.

Pope Sylvester II canonized Adalbert in 999, only two years after his death, an unusually swift recognition that reflected both the political weight of Emperor Otto III and Bolesław and the genuine spread of the cult. In the year 1000 the emperor himself made a pilgrimage to Gniezno, an encounter that confirmed Polish ecclesiastical independence through the creation of an archbishopric at Gniezno with Gaudentius as its first archbishop. Adalbert became a principal patron of Poland, Bohemia, Hungary, and the Prussian mission field; his feast on 23 April was widely observed. In 1039 Duke Bretislaus I of Bohemia removed a substantial portion of the relics from Gniezno to Prague, so that both Gniezno Cathedral and St Vitus Cathedral in Prague have long claimed his remains. Throughout the Middle Ages and into the modern era he has been invoked as apostle of the Prussians and as a symbol of the Christianization of East Central Europe.
