Biography

Short Description

Adaucus, also rendered Adauctus in some Latin and Greek witnesses, was a Christian of distinguished Italian family who suffered martyrdom during the Great Persecution under the Emperor Diocletian in the early fourth century. The principal ancient source is Eusebius of Caesarea, who in Book VIII of the Ecclesiastical History describes him as a man of illustrious Italian birth who had advanced through every grade of imperial honor. Eusebius records that Adaucus held, with a blameless reputation, a high financial office, variously translated as finance minister, superintendent of the treasury, or magistrate of the fisc. In addition to this public career he was known for deeds of piety and for open confession of the God of the Christians.

The same historian states that Adaucus was adorned with the crown of martyrdom while still serving in that financial post. The persecution opened with imperial edicts in 303 that required sacrifice to the gods and struck first at churches, scriptures, and Christians in official service. A courtier of Adaucus’s rank would have been especially exposed at Nicomedia, Diocletian’s eastern residence, and the Roman Martyrology accordingly places his passion in that city, calling him one of the first officials of the imperial household. Eusebius himself does not name the place or the manner of death. Later hagiographical summaries sometimes add that Adaucus reproached the emperor for cruelty toward Christians and was beheaded; those particulars are not in the earliest source and should be treated with caution.

Nothing reliable is known of his year of birth, childhood, or immediate family beyond Italian origin and the senatorial or equestrian standing implied by his career. No ancient text states whether he was married or had children. He was a layman in civil service, not a cleric and not a member of any religious order. His cult is ancient. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 7 February at Nicomedia as a martyr of noble Italian family crowned in the persecution of Diocletian. He is distinct from the Roman martyr Adauctus commemorated with the priest Felix on 30 August; that Adauctus is an unnamed Christian said to have been “added” to Felix’s execution on the Via Ostiensis, a largely legendary passion unrelated to the official described by Eusebius.

Because the record is so thin, Adaucus remains an obscure saint whose historical importance rests on Eusebius’s testimony that even the highest ranks of the civil service produced confessors in the last great pagan persecution. No specific patronages of places, professions, or causes are attached to him in standard directories of saints. His memory is that of a Christian magistrate who did not abandon his faith when the imperial system that had promoted him turned against the Church.
