Biography

Short Description

Adelaide of Italy, also known as Adelaide of Burgundy, was a tenth-century Burgundian princess who became queen of Italy and Holy Roman Empress. She was born in 931 at Orbe in the Kingdom of Upper Burgundy, the daughter of King Rudolf II of Burgundy, of the Elder House of Welf, and Bertha of Swabia. In 947 she was married to Lothair II, king of Italy, a match meant to bind Burgundy and the Italian kingdom. The marriage produced at least one child, Emma, later queen of West Francia. Lothair died in 950, leaving Adelaide a young widow whose royal status made her both a prize and a danger in Italian politics.

After Lothair’s death, Berengar of Ivrea seized the Italian crown as Berengar II and tried to force Adelaide to marry his son Adalbert in order to strengthen his claim. When she refused, she was imprisoned; medieval accounts place her confinement at a fortress associated with Lake Garda. She escaped with the aid of supporters and appealed to Otto I, king of the East Franks. Otto entered Italy in 951, took Pavia, and married her, thereby becoming king of Italy and tying the Saxon dynasty to Burgundian and Italian claims. In 962 Otto was crowned emperor in Rome by Pope John XII, and Adelaide was crowned empress. At the Ottonian court she was a political and ecclesiastical force, intervening in appointments, supporting monastic houses, and acting as intercessor. With Otto she had several children, among them Otto, who succeeded as Emperor Otto II, and Matilda, later abbess of Quedlinburg; other children died in infancy.

After Otto I’s death in 973, Adelaide’s standing was strained by rivalry with her daughter-in-law Theophanu, the Byzantine-born wife of Otto II. She withdrew for a time toward Burgundy and Italy while remaining a major patron of churches and monasteries. When Otto II died in 983, the child Otto III’s succession was contested by Henry the Quarrelsome of Bavaria. Adelaide, Theophanu, and other Ottonian women helped secure the boy’s kingship. Theophanu was the principal regent until her death in 991; thereafter Adelaide served as leading guardian and regent for Otto III in Germany and Italy until he took up personal rule.

In later life Adelaide was closely tied to Cluniac monastic reform and to the foundation and endowment of religious houses. She founded the Benedictine abbey of Selz (Seltz) in Alsace around 991 and spent her last years there in prayer and works of charity. Odilo of Cluny composed a life of her that presented her as a model of imperial piety, generosity to the poor, and steadfast widowhood. She died at Selz on 16 December 999 and was buried at the abbey. Devotion to her spread in the Empire; Pope Urban II canonized her in 1097. Her feast is kept on 16 December. The shape of her life as princess, prisoner, queen, empress, and widow underlies the causes for which she has been invoked as patron.
