Biography

Short Description

Adele Bonolis was born in Milan on 14 August 1908, in the then Kingdom of Italy, and was formed in a Catholic family of modest means in the industrial north. From youth she took part in the lay apostolate, especially Catholic Action, which in early-twentieth-century Italy was a principal channel for the social and spiritual engagement of the laity. The interwar years, the Second World War, and the harsh reconstruction that followed confronted her with the characteristic wounds of a great city: poverty, family collapse, displacement, and the exploitation of young women. Those experiences oriented her toward a life of practical charity rather than toward marriage or a conventional career.

In the postwar decades she devoted herself to the rescue and rehabilitation of girls and women in situations of grave moral and material danger, including former prostitutes, unmarried mothers, and adolescents at risk of trafficking or abandonment. She established small family-style houses (case famiglia) rather than large impersonal institutions, seeking to offer shelter, work training, education, and a climate of dignity in which residents could recover a place in society. She likewise assisted children from broken or abandoned families. Her method joined concrete help with Christian accompaniment and a conviction that every person could be restored through patience and the Gospel.

Bonolis remained a laywoman all her life and never married, offering celibacy as part of a total dedication to the works of mercy. Her activity stayed centered on Milan, where she collaborated with clergy, religious, and other lay people while retaining a personal charism of intelligent, unsentimental charity. She continued this service through the social transformations of the 1950s–1970s until her health failed. She died in Milan on 11 August 1980.

The reputation of her holiness and the testimony of those formed in her houses led to the opening of a cause of beatification. After the diocesan inquiry and the recognition of heroic virtue, Pope Francis declared her Venerable in 2018. A miracle attributed to her intercession was later approved, and she was beatified in 2022. She is remembered as a model of lay holiness and of concrete care for the most wounded members of urban society in twentieth-century Italy.
