Biography

Short Description

Adèle Garnier was born on 15 August 1838 in Grancey-le-Château in the Côte-d'Or, in the Burgundy region of France. She belonged to the generation that lived through the mid- and late-nineteenth-century upheavals of French political life, including the Second Empire, the Franco-Prussian War, and the early Third Republic. Available historical notices describe her as having worked as a teacher before entering religious life. She formed a strong personal devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a cult that had deep roots in French Catholicism since the seventeenth-century revelations associated with Paray-le-Monial and that received renewed national emphasis after 1870 with the votive basilica begun on Montmartre.

In the closing years of the nineteenth century she discerned a call to found a community of women who would live the Rule of Saint Benedict while keeping perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in a spirit of reparation to the Sacred Heart. With the support of Cardinal François-Marie-Benjamin Richard, Archbishop of Paris, the Congregation of the Adorers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Montmartre was established in 1898 near the still-unfinished Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur. Garnier took the religious name Mother Mary of Saint Peter (Mère Marie de Saint-Pierre) and became the foundress and first superior. The sisters combined Benedictine monastic observance with continuous Eucharistic adoration.

The foundation in France lasted only a few years. The Law of Associations of 1 July 1901 required religious congregations to obtain state authorization; many contemplative communities were refused it or declined to apply. In 1901 Mother Mary of Saint Peter and her sisters left France and were received in England. They settled in London at Tyburn, near Marble Arch, the historic site of the gallows where numerous Catholic priests and laypeople had been executed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The community thereafter became widely known as the Tyburn Nuns. Their house developed as both a convent of perpetual adoration and a place of prayer associated with the English Reformation martyrs.

She remained superior of the congregation until her death in London on 17 June 1924. The Adorers continued after her death as a small Benedictine congregation of pontifical right, establishing a limited number of houses beyond England while retaining the dual charism of monastic life and Eucharistic adoration. Adèle Garnier has not been beatified or canonized, and she has no feast in the general Roman calendar and no officially assigned patronages. What is known of her interior life and the earliest years of the foundation rests mainly on the traditions and archives of the Tyburn community, contemporary ecclesiastical correspondence, and later congregational biographies. She remains a figure of congregational and local veneration rather than of a widespread public cult.
