Biography

Short Description

Saint Adelphus, also known as Adelphe or Adelfus, was a bishop of Metz in northeastern Gaul during the fifth century. Traditional catalogues of the bishops of Metz number him as the tenth occupant of that see, placing him after Saint Patientius and before Saint Firminus. He belongs to a poorly documented generation of Gallic bishops who served as Western Roman imperial authority receded in the region and as Frankish power began to take shape. No contemporary acta, letters, or inscriptions that can be securely attributed to him have survived, and later medieval notices of his life are brief and largely conventional.

Almost nothing can be established about his origins, family, education, or the specific events of his episcopate. Later tradition treats him as a holy pastor of the church of Metz, but those characterizations cannot be independently verified from sources close to his own time. The fifth-century church of Metz already possessed a strong episcopal tradition associated with earlier saints such as Clement of Metz; Adelphus was remembered as one of the holy bishops who continued that line. Precise years of birth, consecration, and death are not recorded in sources that meet a critical historical standard. He is dated to the fifth century on the basis of his position in the episcopal list, and some later notices give a round date around the middle of that century, but that figure is not independently confirmed.

The principal historical fact that can be associated with Adelphus after his lifetime is the fate of his relics. In the ninth century, Bishop Drogo of Metz, an illegitimate son of Charlemagne who held the see from 823, translated relics of Saint Adelphus to the Benedictine abbey of Neuwiller (Neuweiler) in Alsace, an event generally placed around 826. That translation made Neuwiller-lès-Saverne the chief center of the saint's cult. The monastic churches there, including the Romanesque church of Saints Peter and Paul and the church of Saint Adelphe, preserved his memory and attracted pilgrimage. Architectural and sculptural remains at Neuwiller, including important Romanesque work, are linked to this veneration. His original burial is associated with Metz; the Alsace shrine became the lasting resting place of the relics.

Adelphus was entered in the Roman Martyrology on 29 August with the notice of a bishop commemorated at Metz in Gaul. His cult is of the ancient, pre-congregation type: it arose from local episcopal and monastic veneration rather than from a formal papal canonization of the later medieval kind. He is not recorded as having been a pope or a patriarch, and there is no reliable evidence concerning marriage or children. Beyond the churches and community of Neuwiller-lès-Saverne and his place among the holy bishops of Metz, specific widespread patronages of professions, illnesses, or other groups are not well attested in standard hagiographical reference works. The historical Adelphus thus remains an obscure fifth-century bishop whose enduring importance lies in the medieval cult that formed around his relics in Alsace and in the liturgical memory of the church of Metz.
