Biography

Short Description

Adolphe Chatillon was a Canadian religious brother of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, known in religion as Brother Théophanius-Léo. He was born in 1871 at Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu in the province of Quebec, in a rural French-Canadian Catholic milieu in which parish life and congregational schools were central to local culture. As a young man he entered the Brothers of the Christian Schools, the congregation founded in seventeenth-century France by Saint John Baptist de La Salle for the Christian education of youth, especially the poor. After receiving the habit and the name Théophanius-Léo, he professed the vows of the Institute and devoted the rest of his life to teaching and to the formation of his confreres in Quebec.

In the schools of the Institute he worked as a classroom teacher and later in posts of responsibility for the training of young Brothers. Those who knew him described a religious of patience and firmness, with particular attention to pupils who struggled with learning or conduct. As director of the juniorate and as master of novices he helped form the next generation of Lasallian educators, insisting both on professional seriousness in the work of teaching and on a solid spiritual life centered on the Eucharist, regular prayer, and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. His ministry belonged to the period in which teaching congregations staffed much of the Catholic school system of French Canada.

Brother Théophanius-Léo was remembered among his brothers for personal austerity, kindness, and fidelity to the ordinary duties of community and school rather than for public prominence. He died in 1929 at Laval-des-Rapides, Quebec. A reputation for holiness continued after his death, and a cause of canonization was introduced. The Holy See later recognized that he had practiced the Christian virtues to a heroic degree, and Pope Francis declared him Venerable. He has not been beatified or canonized and has no feast in the General Roman Calendar.

Widely available sources give only a limited picture of his family of origin and do not record a large body of published writings. The portrait that emerges from the testimony gathered for his cause is that of a relatively hidden religious whose sanctity was expressed in the classroom, the novitiate, and daily community life. Within the Lasallian family he is presented as an example of the Brother-educator faithful to the charism of Saint John Baptist de La Salle in a North American setting.
