Biography

Short Description

Adrian of Ondrusov, known in the world as Andrei Zavalushin, was a Russian Orthodox monk, monastery founder, and saint of the sixteenth century. He belonged to the Zavalishin family of Moscow boyars and is described in the sources as a landowner in the Moscow district. The year and exact place of his birth are not recorded in surviving historical or liturgical texts. Hagiographical accounts state that he met Saint Alexander of Svir, the hermit and abbot of the northern forests, and that this encounter led him to leave secular life. Alexander tonsured him with the name Adrian, and Adrian became one of his disciples. Because Alexander of Svir died in 1533, Adrian’s formation under him belongs to the early sixteenth century.

After living under Alexander’s guidance, Adrian settled on a peninsula on the eastern shore of Lake Ladoga, in the Olonets country (today in the Republic of Karelia). There he founded a monastic community dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, known as the Ondrusov or Andrusov Monastery (Andrusovskaya pustyn). He was its first superior. The foundation belonged to the wider movement of skete and coenobitic monasticism around Lake Ladoga and the River Svir, which in that period gathered disciples of the northern saints. Little independent documentary detail survives about the inner life of the community in his lifetime beyond his role as founder and later local memory of him as a wonderworker.

In 1549 Adrian traveled to Moscow on affairs of the monastery. On the return journey he was attacked and killed by robbers on 15 May. Traditional narratives place the murder near the village of Obzha, in the neighborhood of his monastery rather than in a town. His body was recovered and buried at the Dormition monastery he had founded. The Church has treated his death as a violent martyrdom at the hands of brigands. According to Orthodox tradition his relics were later uncovered and found incorrupt; many Russian sources assign this uncovering to 1551. Veneration developed around the tomb, and he was glorified among the saints of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Adrian is commemorated on 17 May, associated with his repose, and on 26 August, associated with the uncovering of his relics, according to the Julian calendar of the traditional Orthodox synaxaria. He held no episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office. No well-attested list of specific patronages of cities, trades, or illnesses is attached to him in the major calendars, though he is invoked as a monastic saint and wonderworker of the Ladoga region. The monastery he founded later suffered destruction and revival, including damage in the wars of the seventeenth century, but his name remained bound to the site.
