Biography

Short Description

The single given name Adrian (Latin Hadrianus; also Hadrian) is borne by many distinct historical and hagiographical figures—popes of Rome, martyrs, abbots, and bishops—across several centuries and regions. The request supplies no Wikidata identifier, no encyclopedia article, no feast day, no see, and no other unique key. A careful historian therefore cannot assign one person’s dates, places, offices, or cult to this subject without guessing, which is not permitted.

Among saints of the name, Western and Eastern calendars have long commemorated Adrian of Nicomedia, a late Roman officer associated in the passio with his wife Natalia and companions and placed in the persecutions of the early fourth century; his Western feast has often been kept on 8 September. Another well-attested figure is Adrian of Canterbury, an African-born monk and scholar who, according to Bede, declined the archbishopric of Canterbury and instead served as abbot of the monastery of Saints Peter and Paul (later St Augustine’s) in the late seventh and early eighth centuries. Still other Adrians appear in local martyrologies and episcopal lists. None of these lives can be imposed on an unspecified “Adrian.”

The papal series likewise includes several men named Adrian (Hadrian), among them Adrian I in the eighth century, Adrian IV (the only English pope) in the twelfth, and Adrian VI in the sixteenth. Some later writers also treat Pope Adrian III as a saint. Holding the see of Rome would make “pope” yes for those individuals and no for the martyrs and abbots; without knowing which Adrian is meant, the office fields cannot be filled.

Because identity is not established, year of birth, year of death, birth and death places, burial, religious order, spouse, children, feast day, patronages, and canonization or beatification data are all left blank. Patronage lists in particular vary by which Saint Adrian is intended (soldiers and related trades for the Nicomedian martyr; other local causes for other cults) and cannot be compiled honestly here. Further identification would be required before any of those facts could be verified from reliable sources.
