Biography

Short Description

Agabus was a Christian prophet of the first century whose activity is recorded in the Acts of the Apostles. He is known from two episodes in that narrative and is traditionally numbered among the Seventy Disciples, the grouping of early followers mentioned in the Gospel of Luke. Extra-biblical sources generally present him as associated with Jerusalem or Judea and as belonging to the earliest generation of the Church. Beyond the brief notices in Acts, almost nothing about his origins, family, education, or later career can be established from contemporary evidence. Later hagiographical tradition supplies additional details that cannot be independently verified from first-century sources.

In the first of the two New Testament accounts, a group of prophets travelled from Jerusalem to Antioch, then a major centre of the Gentile mission. One of them, named Agabus, stood up and, speaking through the Spirit, predicted that a severe famine would spread over the inhabited world. The author of Acts notes that this famine took place in the reign of the emperor Claudius (41–54). Independent historical sources, including the Jewish historian Josephus, attest to serious food shortages in Judea and neighbouring regions in the mid-forties of the first century, which accords with the setting given in Acts. The church at Antioch responded by sending relief to the brethren in Judea, an episode that also introduces Barnabas and Saul (Paul) as carriers of that aid.

The second appearance of Agabus occurs later in Acts, when Paul was staying at Caesarea in the house of Philip the Evangelist. Agabus came down from Judea, took Paul’s belt, bound his own feet and hands with it, and declared that the Holy Spirit said the Jews at Jerusalem would bind the owner of the belt and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. The prophecy functions in the narrative as a warning of the imprisonment that awaited Paul in Jerusalem. The symbolic action of binding, reminiscent of the enacted signs of Old Testament prophets such as Jeremiah and Ezekiel, underlines Agabus’s identity as a prophet in the biblical sense rather than merely a preacher or teacher.

Later Christian tradition, especially in the East, counted Agabus among the Seventy Apostles and assigned him a missionary career after the events recorded in Acts. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 13 February and locates his death at Antioch, describing him as a prophet mentioned by Luke. Eastern Orthodox calendars keep his memory on 8 March and jointly with the Seventy on 4 January. Some accounts state that he suffered martyrdom at Antioch; other traditions place his death at Jerusalem. The New Testament itself is silent on the manner and place of his death, and no early independent historical witness confirms the circumstances. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his cult rests on ancient liturgical commemoration.

Because the sources are so sparse, many aspects of Agabus’s life remain unknown. No reliable evidence records his year of birth or death, his parentage, whether he married or had children, or the place of his burial. He held no episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office and is not associated with any later religious order. His enduring significance in Christian memory lies in the two prophecies preserved in Acts and in his place among the prophetic figures of the apostolic age.
