Biography

Short Description

Agape of Thessaloniki, also known in Latin sources as Agapes, was a Christian virgin and martyr of the early fourth century, almost always commemorated together with her sisters Chionia and Irene. The three women are linked in the earliest surviving passion narratives with the city of Thessalonica (present-day Thessaloniki) in the Roman province of Macedonia, where they suffered in the Great Persecution under the emperors Diocletian and Maximian. No contemporary source records Agape’s year of birth, parentage, or a birthplace independent of her later association with Thessalonica. Later medieval notices that place the sisters originally at Aquileia in northern Italy are not securely founded and may reflect confusion with other cults. What the tradition consistently affirms is that the three were unmarried women who had embraced a life of Christian virginity.

The historical core of their story is a Latin passion narrative which scholars of hagiography have generally regarded as one of the more restrained early accounts of Diocletianic martyrdoms in the Balkans. In 303–304 imperial edicts ordered the destruction of churches, the surrender of sacred books, and sacrifice to the gods. Agape, Chionia, and Irene were arrested at Thessalonica for refusing to eat meat that had been offered to idols and for retaining Christian scriptures in violation of those edicts. They were examined by Dulcitius, the governor of the province. The interrogation, as reported, turns on their confession of faith, their refusal to sacrifice, and their possession of the forbidden books. Agape and Chionia were condemned to be burned alive. The passion places their death in the fire at Thessalonica in 304, traditionally on 3 April. Irene, described as the youngest, was held back for a further hearing and was executed a few days later, traditionally on 5 April, after examination by an official named Sisinius. Ancient reports of Irene’s death differ, some speaking of burning and others of death by arrows.

A well-known legendary expansion, not present in the more sober recension of the acts, recounts that Dulcitius conceived a lustful design upon the imprisoned virgins, entered the kitchen of the prison by night, and in a fit of madness embraced pots and pans, covering himself with soot, to the mockery of his soldiers. This episode was dramatized in the tenth century by the Saxon canoness Hrotsvitha of Gandersheim in her Latin play Dulcitius, and it has colored later popular retellings. It should be distinguished from the historical nucleus of the martyrdom. After the deaths of the sisters, their cult is attested in both the Latin West and the Greek East. The Roman Martyrology records Agape and Chionia at Thessalonica on 3 April and Irene on 5 April. Eastern Orthodox calendars commonly keep a joint feast of the three martyrs on 16 April. Like other martyrs of the ancient church, Agape was never the object of a formal process of canonization of the later papal type; her public veneration belongs to the pre-congregation cultus of the martyrs. No reliable source identifies her burial place, and no well-documented list of specific patronages is attached to her name alone.
