Biography

Short Description

Agapetus of the Kiev Caves, also called Agapitus or Agapit the Unmercenary, was an eleventh-century monk and healer of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves) in Kiev, the chief monastic centre of Kievan Rus'. He belonged to the early generations of cave-dwellers who gathered around Saint Anthony of the Caves. Living in the Near Caves, he combined strict asceticism with unpaid medical care for sick monks and laypeople. Church tradition ranks him among the first unmercenary physicians of the East Slavic world: he treated the ill with herbs, fasting, and prayer rather than with the learned medicine of the courts, and he refused payment for his services.

The principal medieval source for his life is the Kiev Caves Paterikon, a compilation of monastic stories assembled in the centuries after his death. According to that tradition, Agapetus tended the brethren and visitors without accepting gold, giving away whatever was offered. His reputation spread beyond the monastery. A well-known episode concerns Vladimir Monomakh, then prince of Chernigov, who fell gravely ill. Court physicians, including a celebrated Armenian doctor, could not help him. Agapetus sent a herbal draught from the Caves; the prince recovered and later came in person to thank the monk. Agapetus would not leave his cell to receive princely honour and refused gifts, insisting that healing came from God.

The same Paterikon describes a contest of skill and faith with the Armenian physician, who was famed for diagnosing the hour of death. When the Armenian declared that certain patients were doomed, Agapetus restored them by prayer and simple remedies. In the end the Armenian predicted that Agapetus himself would die within a few days. The monk replied that the Lord would call him only after three months, and he died at the time he had foretold, according to later calendars in 1095. Struck by this, the Armenian accepted Orthodox baptism and became a monk of the Caves.

Agapetus was buried in the Near Caves (Anthony's Caves) of the Lavra, where his relics have remained an object of veneration. The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates him on 1 June (Julian calendar), with the Synaxis of the Fathers of the Near Caves on 28 September, and among all the venerable fathers of the Kiev Caves on the Second Sunday of Great Lent. He is invoked as a healer and unmercenary physician. Precise details of his birth, family, and early life are not preserved in contemporary documents; what is known derives from monastic tradition recorded in the Paterikon.
