Biography

Short Description

Agapitus of Palestrina, known in Latin as Agapitus of Praeneste and in Italian as Sant'Agapito, is venerated as a Christian martyr of the third century. His cult has been associated from late antiquity with the city of Palestrina, the ancient Praeneste in Latium, east of Rome. The traditional Latin passio that circulated in the early Middle Ages presents him as a youth of about fifteen years, born of a noble family of Praeneste. During a persecution which that legend ascribes to the reign of the emperor Aurelian (270-275), Agapitus was denounced as a Christian, arrested, and brought before a magistrate named Antiochus. He refused to offer sacrifice to the gods of Rome and openly confessed Christ.

The same passio then recounts a sequence of tortures typical of late antique martyr narratives. Agapitus was scourged, suspended by the feet over a fire so that smoke might suffocate him, and plunged into boiling water, yet he is said to have remained unharmed and unshaken. He was next exposed to wild beasts in the amphitheatre of Praeneste; the animals, according to the account, would not attack him. He was finally beheaded. These episodes cannot be treated as a reliable historical record. Modern hagiographers regard the acts as largely legendary, composed well after the events they purport to describe and shaped by conventional motifs. Aurelian is not otherwise known to have conducted a general persecution of Christians comparable to those of Decius or Diocletian, and the named officials and miraculous deliverances belong to the stock of hagiographic invention rather than to independently attested history. The traditional year of death, 274, depends on this association with Aurelian and on the feast date, not on a contemporary chronicle.

What can be affirmed with greater confidence is that a martyr named Agapitus was venerated at Praeneste from a very early period, and that a basilica rose over his tomb. The antiquity of that cult is the principal argument for the historical existence of the martyr, even if the details of his passion cannot be verified. References to the shrine appear in early medieval sources connected with the popes of Rome. Relics attributed to Agapitus have been kept at Palestrina; some portions were later translated to other churches. The co-cathedral of the suburbicarian diocese of Palestrina, dedicated to Sant'Agapito Martire, stands in continuity with this ancient sanctuary and remains the principal place of his burial and veneration.

The Roman Martyrology commemorates Agapitus on 18 August, the date on which he has been remembered in the Roman rite for many centuries. He is the principal patron saint of the city of Palestrina. In Christian art he is commonly represented as a youthful figure, sometimes with the palm of martyrdom, a sword, or lions, in allusion to the legendary exposure to beasts. Later writers have at times confused him with other saints of the same name, including the Roman deacon Agapitus who was put to death with Pope Sixtus II in 258, and Pope Agapetus I of the sixth century; they are distinct figures. Because the surviving narrative is late and conventional, the secure facts remain limited: an early and localized martyr-cult at Praeneste, a basilica over the tomb, and the continuous liturgical memory of Agapitus as a boy martyr of the Roman Campagna in the third century.
