Biography

Short Description

Agatha Chŏn Kyŏng-hyŏb (Korean: 전경협 아가타) was a Korean Catholic laywoman and martyr of the Joseon period, numbered among the 103 Martyrs of Korea. She was born in 1816 in Korea, in a Church that had been planted not by resident foreign missionaries but by Korean Confucian scholars who encountered Catholic books in Beijing in the late eighteenth century and received baptism there. By the time of her birth the community had already survived the Sinyu persecution of 1801, in which many of the first generation of Korean Catholics were executed or scattered. Faith was typically handed on in secret households, through memorized prayers, oral catechesis, and carefully hidden books, because the Joseon state regarded Christianity as a heterodox teaching that rejected ancestral rites and so threatened the Confucian moral and political order.

Little survives that would allow a full personal biography. The notices preserved in Korean Church compilations and in the documentation assembled for beatification present her as a poor and devout laywoman of the generation that came of age between the persecutions of 1801 and 1839. Formal religious orders of women had not yet been established in Korea, and she is remembered among the lay martyrs rather than as a member of a congregation. Like other Korean Catholic women of her time, she would have practiced the faith under the double constraint of state prohibition and of a social world in which a woman’s religious choices were closely bound to family and household. The sources do not furnish a detailed account of her family circumstances, occupation, or daily life beyond the general portrait of piety and perseverance that the martyr lists record.

In 1839 the Gihae persecution broke out under the regency of Queen Sunwon, during the reign of King Heonjong. It was one of the most severe anti-Catholic campaigns of the Joseon era. French missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society, including Bishop Laurent Imbert and Fathers Pierre Maubant and Jacques Chastan, were put to death, and Korean clergy and large numbers of laypeople were arrested. Agatha Chŏn Kyŏng-hyŏb was seized in the course of this campaign, interrogated, and tortured in an effort to make her apostatize. Traditional accounts state that she refused to renounce the faith. She was held in prison in Seoul, where conditions—cold, hunger, crowding, and the effects of beating—were routinely lethal. She died in captivity in 1840, a date commonly given as 31 January, and is thus counted among those who perished in prison rather than by public beheading at the execution grounds.

The Korean Catholic community preserved the names of the Gihae martyrs through interrogation records, oral memory, and the later work of clergy who prepared causes for Rome. Agatha was included among the seventy-nine Korean martyrs beatified by Pope Pius XI on 5 July 1925. On 6 May 1984, during an apostolic visit to Korea, Pope John Paul II canonized the 103 Martyrs of Korea, Agatha Chŏn Kyŏng-hyŏb among them, at a Mass in Seoul. The group is celebrated in the liturgy on 20 September. Compared with better-documented figures such as Saint Andrew Kim Taegŏn, the first Korean priest, her individual story remains brief; what the historical and hagiographical record supports is that she was a young Korean laywoman who died in prison in Seoul for the Catholic faith during the Gihae persecution and is venerated by the Church as a saint and martyr.
