Biography

Short Description

Agatha Lee Gan-nan, known in Korean as Yi Gan-nan Agatha (이간난 아가타) and also romanized as Agatha Yi Kan-nan, was a Catholic laywoman and martyr of nineteenth-century Korea. She was born in 1814 in Seoul, capital of the Joseon kingdom. Catholicism had reached Korea in the 1780s through Korean lay scholars who encountered Christian books in Beijing, and the faith remained a capital offense under Joseon law. Earlier suppressions, notably in 1801, had already driven the small community underground. Agatha was raised in a Catholic family that practiced in secret during this period of intermittent persecution.

At the age of sixteen she married, but her husband died after only eight months. As a young widow she returned to live with her mother and continued a life of prayer within the clandestine Church. In 1839 the Gihae persecution broke out during the regency of Queen Sunwon for the child king Heonjong. Officials hunted Catholics across the kingdom and demanded that they recant. Agatha and her mother were arrested in Seoul, imprisoned, interrogated, and tortured. She refused to apostatize.

Condemned to death, she was beheaded on 31 January 1840 outside the Small West Gate (Seosomun) of Seoul, a customary execution ground for Catholic prisoners of the capital. She was twenty-six years old. Like many Korean martyrs of the period, she was not granted an honored public burial by the authorities; the faithful later recovered relics when they could. Seosomun subsequently became a major shrine associated with the Korean martyrs.

Agatha was included among the martyrs of the 1839 persecution beatified by Pope Pius XI on 5 July 1925. Pope John Paul II canonized her on 6 May 1984 in Seoul, together with Saint Andrew Kim Taegon, Saint Paul Chong Hasang, and 100 companions—the first canonization ceremony held outside Rome in modern times. The Church commemorates the Holy Korean Martyrs on 20 September. What is known of her life comes chiefly from government interrogation records and from testimonies assembled for the beatification process, which present her as a widow of the Seoul Catholic community who chose death rather than denial of her faith.
