Biography

Short Description

Agatha Yi Kyŏng-i (Korean: 이경이 아가타) was a Korean Catholic laywoman and martyr of the Joseon period. She was born in 1814 in Seoul, into a Catholic family, at a time when the Church in Korea still existed largely as an underground community of lay believers. Catholicism had taken root in Korea in the late eighteenth century through Korean converts who encountered the faith in China; by Agatha’s generation the community had already survived earlier state repression, notably the Sinyu persecution of 1801. Joseon law and neo-Confucian ritual orthodoxy treated Catholicism as a heterodox threat to ancestral rites and royal authority, so Korean Catholics of the early nineteenth century typically practiced in secret and for long stretches without a resident hierarchy.

Catholic tradition records her as a virgin who did not marry, choosing instead a life of prayer and fidelity to the forbidden faith. In the Korean Catholic milieu of that century a number of women remained unmarried and formed informal households of mutual support, catechesis, and charity in the capital, always under risk of denunciation. Agatha belonged to this circle of committed laywomen rather than to any canonical religious order. Surviving notices of her life are brief: they preserve her baptismal name, her status as a virgin, her Seoul origin, and her association with other Catholics of the city, but they do not yield a large independent store of personal anecdote beyond the martyr acts and later hagiographical summaries.

The Gihae persecution broke out in 1839, in the reign of King Heonjong. French missionaries, including Bishop Laurent-Joseph-Marius Imbert, were executed, and Korean Catholics were hunted, interrogated, and pressed to recant by repudiating the faith. Agatha was arrested in the course of this campaign, imprisoned in Seoul, and subjected to interrogation and torture intended to force apostasy and the betrayal of fellow believers. She refused to renounce Christianity. After confinement she was condemned to death.

On 31 January 1840 she was beheaded in Seoul, at about twenty-six years of age, together with other Catholics sentenced in the same persecution. She is counted among the 103 Korean Martyr Saints. The martyrs of the 1839–1846 persecutions, including Agatha, were beatified by Pope Pius XI on 5 July 1925. Pope John Paul II canonized the group of 103 on 6 May 1984 in Seoul. Their collective liturgical memorial is kept on 20 September. Execution of many of this group took place at the capital’s western gates; later Korean Catholic memory gathered relics and built shrines at sites such as Seosomun, but a securely documented individual burial place for Agatha Yi Kyŏng-i is not established in the standard historical notices.
