Biography

Short Description

François Nourry, known in religion as Agathange (Agathangelus) de Vendôme, was born in 1598 at Vendôme in the Loire region of France. He entered the Capuchin reform of the Franciscan order, which in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries combined strict poverty with itinerant preaching and overseas missions. After profession and ordination he was sent to the Capuchin missions in the eastern Mediterranean, a field encouraged by the French crown and by the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. In Egypt and the Levant he studied Arabic and worked among Coptic Christians as well as among European merchants and captives, in the hope of fostering reunion with Rome and of sustaining a Catholic presence in the Ottoman world.

In the 1630s the Catholic mission in Ethiopia had collapsed. Emperor Fasilides, reversing the policy of his father Susenyos, expelled the Jesuits, restored the Ethiopian Orthodox Church as the sole permitted Christian body, and forbade Catholic clergy. Rome nonetheless sought another approach. Agathange and his fellow Capuchin Cassien de Nantes (Gonzalve Vaz Lopez-Netto, of Portuguese family, born at Nantes) were chosen to enter the highlands and attempt contact with the Ethiopian Church. They made their way toward Ethiopia around 1637, reportedly by the Red Sea route, and entered a country still hostile to Latin missionaries.

They were discovered, arrested, and taken to Gondar, the new imperial capital founded by Fasilides. Imprisoned there, they were pressed to abandon communion with Rome and to accept the faith of the Ethiopian Church as then defined against the Jesuit mission. They refused. On 7 August 1638 they were put to death by hanging at Gondar. Catholic accounts from the period and later hagiography present the execution as martyrdom for the Roman confession and for ecclesiastical unity.

The Capuchin order preserved their memory. In 1905 Pope Pius X beatified Agathange de Vendôme and Cassien de Nantes. They have not been canonized. Their feast is kept on 7 August, the traditional date of their death. Their lives illustrate both the reach and the limits of seventeenth-century Capuchin missions to the Christian East after the failure of the Jesuit enterprise in Ethiopia.
