Biography

Short Description

Saint Agathius, known in Greek as Akakios or Agathios and in Italian as Agazio, was a Christian martyr of the late third or early fourth century. Hagiographical tradition identifies him as a Cappadocian Greek who served as a centurion in the Roman army and associates him with the great persecution of Christians under the emperor Diocletian. No contemporary imperial rescript or ecclesiastical chronicle names him individually, and the earliest evidence for his cult is indirect: later martyrologies and the existence, already in late antiquity, of a church of Saint Acacius at Constantinople. His year of birth is unknown, as is any specific town of origin within the Roman province of Cappadocia.

According to the received passion narrative, Agathius was stationed in Thrace when he was denounced for his Christian faith. He was first examined and tortured at Perinthus (Heraclea) on the Propontis. Remaining steadfast, he was then taken to Byzantium, where he suffered further torments and was beheaded. Traditional dating places the martyrdom in or about the year 303, at the opening of the Diocletianic persecution. The story belongs to the wider genre of military-martyr legends that circulated in the Greek East; its narrative details are pious tradition rather than independently verified biography, and historians treat them with corresponding caution.

Veneration of Agathius took root in Constantinople. The Roman Martyrology records his feast on 7 May, describing him as a centurion martyred at Constantinople under Diocletian. In the medieval period relics attributed to the saint were translated to Squillace in Calabria, southern Italy. There he became known as San Agazio and was adopted as the principal patron of the town; his relics are preserved in Squillace, and the local cult remains the most prominent devotion attached to this martyr. Feast observances in Calabria have been kept on 7 May, in line with the Martyrology, though some Western calendars have also noted 8 May.

Agathius is not to be confused with other holy figures of similar name, in particular the legendary Acacius who appears as leader of the Ten Thousand Martyrs of Mount Ararat, a largely fabulous medieval legend, or with various bishops named Acacius. Nothing reliable is known of his family, marital status, or children, and he is not recorded as a monk, bishop, or holder of any ecclesiastical office. He is remembered in both Western and Eastern Christian tradition as a soldier-martyr of the Diocletianic age, whose historical existence is plausible but whose biographical particulars rest on later liturgical sources rather than on contemporary documentation.
