Biography

Short Description

Saint Agathoclia (also spelled Agathocleia or Agathoklia; Greek Ἀγαθόκλεια) is a Christian martyr commemorated on 17 September in the Eastern Orthodox synaxaria and in the Roman Martyrology. Almost nothing about her can be established from contemporary historical documents. The notices that survive are brief liturgical and martyrological entries, not independent biographies, and they do not name a city, province, emperor, or year. Later compilers have sometimes placed her among the victims of the Roman persecutions, but that dating is conjectural and is not required by the oldest notices. She is remembered as a household servant, not as a member of a religious order, a cleric, or a public figure.

According to the account preserved in Orthodox hagiographical collections (including the notice used by the Orthodox Church in America), Agathoclia served in the house of a Christian named Paulinus whose wife, Paulina, remained a pagan. The mistress resented the servant’s Christianity and tried for a long time to force her to abandon it. Agathoclia was beaten without mercy, had her hair torn out, and was subjected to other afflictions. When these measures failed, she was brought to trial. She continued to confess Christ; her tongue was cut out, she was beaten with stones, and she was finally thrown into a fire, in which she died. The Roman Martyrology for 17 September gives a closely parallel summary: Agathoclia, servant of an unbelieving woman, was long afflicted with blows and other sufferings so that she might deny Christ; presented at last to the judge and cruelly lacerated, she persisted in confessing the faith, had her tongue cut out, and was cast into the fire.

Because the sources are so short, no reliable statement can be made about her birthplace, family, age, or burial. She is presented throughout as an unmarried servant and is not recorded as having had a spouse or children. Her cult is ancient and liturgical rather than the result of a formal papal canonization or beatification in the later medieval or modern sense. She appears in both Eastern and Western calendars on the same date, which indicates that the story circulated widely enough to enter the Roman Martyrology, but it did not generate a substantial legendary cycle, a known shrine, or a set of attributed relics whose history can be traced.

No standard hagiographical reference work attaches to Agathoclia a list of patronages of places, professions, illnesses, or social groups. She is honored simply as a martyr who remained faithful under domestic persecution and judicial torture. The combination of a named mistress and master in the Orthodox recension and the anonymous “unbelieving woman” of the Martyrology shows how little beyond the core of servant, torture, excision of the tongue, and death by fire was regarded as fixed. For the historian, Agathoclia therefore remains an obscure figure whose memory is carried by the liturgy rather than by a recoverable civic or monastic archive.
