Biography

Short Description

Agathon of Scetis, commonly called Abba Agathon in the monastic literature of late antiquity, was an Egyptian Christian monk counted among the Desert Fathers. He lived in the monastic desert of Scetis (Greek Sketis or Skete; corresponding to the modern Wadi El Natrun in the western Nile Delta) during the later fourth and early fifth centuries. Virtually everything that can be said of him with historical caution comes from the alphabetical and systematic collections of the Apophthegmata Patrum (the Sayings of the Desert Fathers), which preserve a substantial cluster of sayings and anecdotes under his name. No independent contemporary Life of the kind composed by Palladius in the Lausiac History or in the Historia Monachorum in Aegypto is devoted to him. Neither a verified year of birth nor a firmly documented year of death survives in early sources. Later hagiographical compilations sometimes assign his death to about 435, but that figure is conventional rather than established by contemporary evidence, and it should not be treated as a precise date.

In the sayings, Agathon is portrayed as a monk of unusual discernment, humility, and practical charity, held in respect by other well-known elders such as Abba Poemen. He is described as combining skill with his hands and fervor of spirit. One of the most often repeated notices states that he lived for three years with a stone in his mouth until he had learned to keep silence. He was remembered for refusing to let the sun go down upon a quarrel: he would not go to sleep while holding anything against anyone, nor permit another to go to sleep while holding a grievance against him. His teaching stressed that a monk ought not to be a stranger to his neighbor, and that perfect charity would even accept exchanging one’s own body for that of a leper. He trained disciples and lived with them in the desert, joining eremitical severity to a strong sense of responsibility for others. The collections present him as an elder whose authority was moral and ascetic rather than hierarchical; he held no episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office.

Several anecdotes, widely copied in later Greek, Coptic, Latin, and Oriental recensions, illustrate the tests applied to his humility and patience. In one, brothers came expressly to try him and accused him in succession of fornication, pride, idle speech, and slander. He accepted each charge without self-defense. When they then called him a heretic, he denied it immediately. Asked why he had admitted the other faults but not this one, he answered that such accusations are profitable for the soul to bear, whereas heresy is separation from God. In another story he and his companions spent a long time building a cell; as soon as it was finished, a brother in need asked for it, and Agathon gave it away without argument, repeating such generosity more than once. A further narrative tells how, on the way to market to sell their handiwork, he found a sick man who asked to be carried into town, then to have goods sold on his behalf, then to be carried home again. Agathon complied at every step. The stranger at last blessed him and vanished, revealed in the tale as an angel sent to test him. These stories were transmitted as models of meekness, hospitality, and refusal to insist on one’s own rights.

The same collections preserve an account of his last hours. For three days he remained as if before a tribunal, scarcely speaking. When the brethren asked whether he was afraid, he said that he stood before the judgment of God. They reminded him of his life of ascesis; he replied that he had striven to keep the commandments but could not know whether his works had pleased God, because the judgments of God are not like the judgments of men. After this he died among his disciples in the desert. No reliable record of a specific burial shrine has been preserved. Because he is known almost only through anecdotal sayings rather than through a formal vita, many ordinary biographical details—parentage, a precise birthplace within Egypt, any life before monastic profession—remain unknown. The Greek name Agathon (good) was common in Roman and late antique Egypt and does not by itself indicate foreign origin; unlike Arsenius of Rome or Evagrius of Pontus, he is not described in the sources as a stranger to Egypt.

Agathon is venerated as a saint in the Coptic Orthodox and Eastern Orthodox traditions as one of the Desert Fathers, by the early monastic consensus that received such elders as holy men, not by a later papal or patriarchal process of canonization or beatification. Liturgical dates attached to his memory vary among calendars and are easily confused with other saints of the same name, including Pope Agatho of Rome in the seventh century and the Coptic Pope Agathon of Alexandria, who are distinct historical figures. His lasting importance in Christian monastic tradition lies in the sayings attributed to him: they were read as a compact portrait of discretion, silence, almsgiving, and fear of God’s judgment, and they continued to be copied in Eastern and Western monastic collections long after the communities of Scetis had been transformed by later history.
