Biography

Short Description

Ageltrude (also spelled Agiltrude or Ageltruda) was a Lombard princess of the later ninth century who became queen of Italy and Holy Roman empress by marriage. She was the daughter of Adelchis, prince of Benevento from 854 until his death in 878, a southern Italian Lombard ruler whose principality preserved a precarious independence amid Frankish, Byzantine, and Muslim pressures on the peninsula. Some sources name her mother Adeltrude. In the later ninth century she was married to Guy (Guido) of the Widonid family, duke of Spoleto and Camerino, thereby linking the Beneventan princely house to the dynasty that dominated much of central Italy after the death of Emperor Louis II in 875 and the contested Carolingian succession in Italy.

Guy was crowned king of Italy in 889 and emperor by Pope Stephen V in 891, so Ageltrude became queen and empress. Their son Lambert was associated in the kingship and later in the imperial title while still young. Ageltrude appears in contemporary charters and took a visible part in representing Spoletan authority. That authority was never unchallenged: Berengar of Friuli remained a rival in the north, and Pope Formosus, wary of Spoletan control over Rome, invited Arnulf of Carinthia into Italy. Arnulf took Rome in 896 and was crowned emperor, a direct repudiation of Lambert’s and Ageltrude’s claims.

Guy died in December 894. As widow and mother of the young emperor, Ageltrude worked to recover Rome and to undo Formosus’s acts. After Arnulf’s withdrawal and Formosus’s death in 896, the Spoletan party reasserted control of the city. In January 897 Pope Stephen VI, generally regarded as a Spoletan protégé, held the so-called Cadaver Synod: the corpse of Formosus was exhumed, dressed in papal vestments, tried, condemned, and thrown into the Tiber. Contemporary and later writers connected this proceeding with the vengeance of the Spoletan court, and Ageltrude has often been described as a driving political force behind it, though the exact measure of her personal responsibility cannot be established with certainty from the surviving sources. Lambert died in October 898, ending the brief Spoletan imperial line.

Thereafter Ageltrude receded from the center of Italian politics as Berengar I consolidated the kingship. She is still documented in the early tenth century; a charter of 921 records her making a pious donation, showing that she remained a woman of property and religious patronage. Traditional accounts give her death as 27 August 923. Her place of death and burial are not securely recorded. She is one of the better-attested laywomen of late Carolingian Italy, notable not as a canonized saint or monastic foundress but as a queen-empress who exercised visible influence in the violent papal and imperial contests of the 890s.
