Biography

Short Description

Agilulfus of Cologne, whose name also appears as Agilulf, was a churchman of the Frankish kingdom in the eighth century, remembered as bishop of Cologne and venerated as a martyr. Almost nothing about his early life can be established from contemporary records. Later medieval writers, drawing on an eleventh-century Life that modern historians treat as largely legendary, presented him as a man of noble birth who was trained as a monk at the abbey of Stavelot (Stablo) in the Ardennes, then under Abbot Angelinus. That same tradition makes him abbot of the double monastery of Stavelot-Malmedy before his elevation to the see of Cologne. Cologne's episcopal lists do include an Agilulf among the bishops of the mid-eighth century, but whether the Cologne bishop and the Stavelot abbot were the same person remains a matter of scholarly discussion. His name is Germanic, and his career belongs to the Austrasian church of the late Merovingian and early Carolingian period.

The later vita portrays Agilulfus as an austere reformer who did not hesitate to censure the conduct of powerful laymen and of the court. Because of this outspokenness he is said to have made enemies who arranged his murder, and later devotion therefore honoured him as a martyr. Chronology, however, undermines some of the most colourful versions of the story: Charles Martel, sometimes named as the saint's persecutor, died in 741, whereas the conventional date given for Agilulfus's death is 750. Historians therefore regard the political background of the killing as uncertain, and the martyrdom itself as a claim that cannot be corroborated from eighth-century sources. What can be said with more confidence is that by the high Middle Ages Agilulfus was commemorated as a bishop-martyr associated with Cologne, and that his cult was already established in the Rhineland by that time.

Devotion to him centred on Cologne. Relics attributed to Agilulfus were kept in the collegiate church of St. Maria ad Gradus (St. Mary of the Steps) beside the cathedral. After that church was demolished in the early nineteenth century, the relics were translated to Cologne Cathedral, where they have remained an object of local veneration. His feast is observed on 9 July. No early papal act of canonization is recorded; like many saints of the first millennium he belongs to the so-called pre-congregation period, in which local cult and liturgical commemoration preceded any formal process at Rome. He is not known to have been assigned a distinctive set of patronages of places, trades, or causes beyond this Cologne cult.

Beyond the points just outlined, the documentary trail is extremely thin. Neither a birth year nor a precise place of birth or of death can be verified from reliable sources, and office-taking dates must not be confused with a date of birth. Claims sometimes encountered in popular notices, such as an Irish origin, are inconsistent with his Germanic name and with the Frankish setting of his career, and they lack support in contemporary evidence. Agilulfus thus stands as an obscure but locally important figure of the eighth-century Rhineland church, whose historical outline is recoverable only in the most general terms and whose richer legendary portrait belongs to a later age of hagiography.
