Biography

Short Description

Agnes Tsao Kou Ying, also known in Chinese as Cao Guiying or Cao Kuiying, was a nineteenth-century Chinese Catholic laywoman and martyr. She was born in 1821 in the village of Wujiazhai, in Xingyi county in Guizhou province in southwestern China, then under the Qing dynasty. Orphaned while still a child, she grew up in a Catholic setting and received instruction in the faith at a time when Christianity in the interior of China was still a small, often legally precarious minority. Guizhou and the neighboring province of Guangxi were among the regions where French missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society (Missions Étrangères de Paris) later sought to rebuild and expand Catholic communities after earlier waves of prohibition and persecution.

At about the age of eighteen she married a local farmer. The marriage was brief: her husband died after roughly two years, leaving her a young widow with little means of support. She then earned her living as a cook and household servant. In the early 1850s she came into contact with the missionary work then being carried on in Guangxi, notably by the French priest Auguste Chapdelaine. She offered herself as a catechist, a role that in the Chinese missions of that period often fell to trusted lay people, especially women who could enter homes and instruct other women and children. She traveled among scattered rural Christians, teaching doctrine and supporting communities that had little regular access to clergy.

That work made her conspicuous. In 1856 the local magistrate in the Xilin area of Guangxi moved against Chapdelaine and the Chinese Catholics associated with him. Agnes was arrested, interrogated, and tortured in an effort to force her to recant. She refused. Condemned, she was confined in a narrow wooden cage, a lingering form of punishment and execution then in use, and died of exhaustion, hunger, and exposure. Traditional accounts place her death at Yaoshan in Guangxi in 1856, in the same persecution that claimed Chapdelaine and other companions. She was not a member of a religious order; she died as a widow and lay catechist.

Her cult developed with that of the other Chinese martyrs of the nineteenth century. Pope Leo XIII beatified her on 27 May 1900 together with Chapdelaine and companions of the Guangxi mission. On 1 October 2000 Pope John Paul II canonized her among the one hundred and twenty Martyr Saints of China (Augustine Zhao Rong and companions). The group is commemorated in the General Roman Calendar on 9 July. Agnes is remembered in Catholic hagiography as a lay widow who taught the faith in rural southern China and died rather than renounce it.
